A special visit from multi-award winning poet and playwright, Philip Wilcox, heralded the beginning of Book Week at Newhaven College. The 2016 National Book Week theme is "Australia! Story Country"
Philip is the current Australian Poetry Slam Champion and a two time NSW Poetry Slam Champion. Philip hosts and co-organises Three Poets Speak – a Sydney showcase of the finest spoken word artists from around Australia. He has featured in major events like Sydney Writers' Festival, Wollongong Writers' Festival and Newtown Festival, and recently headlined the Melbourne event Voices in the Attic and represented NSW against Victoria in an interstate exhibition slam.
When workshopping with our Year 8 students, Philip was pleased to see scared faces at the beginning of the session grow in confidence as they put pen to paper, with many then presenting a poem to the class. “I hope kids learn that poetry is not just about writing, but also about reading, listening, sharing ideas and performing. Often kids that aren’t typically good at English do well at performance poetry, they have vivid imaginations that they can express in a dramatic format.”
Book week continues with Literary and Australian Knowledge quizzes, a Book Review Competition, ‘Our Story: An Amazing Hysterical History of Australia’ performance by Bigbuzzproductions on Wednesday and the highly anticipated Junior School Book Week Parade on Thursday.
