Year 10 marks the beginning of senior schooling, and Newhaven College offers a range of compulsory core subjects and specialist electives that provide a very sound basis for VCE. Many students elect to undertake some VCE study during Year 10, however the majority of VCE studies are undertaken in Years 11 and 12. A broad range of subjects is offered at VCE level across all key learning areas and students are encouraged to consider pre-requisite subjects for university courses that keep their higher education options open.
All students participate in early commencement, where immediately after exams in Years 10 and 11 the students commence their VCE work. This allows for challenging homework tasks and preparation to be carried out during the summer break and also creates a lengthy revision period after completion of coursework but prior to the examination period. This intense focus on making thinking visible has been highly successful with consistently excellent results placing Newhaven College among the top two performing schools in Gippsland.
VCE students also have the ability to complete a nationally recognised, vocationally based certificate at a TAFE College. Newhaven College has close working links with TAFE institutions and students have the ability to complete a nationally recognised, vocationally based certificate at one of these Colleges in an area that best suits their interests and abilities. Students also have flexibility beyond the curriculum offered by Newhaven College, and may undertake a VCE unit or units through Distance Education. Both TAFE and Distance Education attract additional costs.
Commencing a school based apprenticeships or undertaking university enhancement programs can also be arranged where this is considered.
