Years 7 & 8

The commencement of secondary schooling is an exciting and challenging time for every child as they negotiate the transition from childhood into adolescence. At Newhaven College, we endeavour to make your child’s transition to our school smooth and enjoyable.

The ethos of the school is based upon mutual respect between teacher and students, in which high standards of social and academic expectations are actively encouraged. The College caters for individual differences among students and places great importance on each student being known. The strengthening of self-esteem and the students’ sense of community equips each individual with the qualities required for good citizenship and the confidence to contribute.

A broad curriculum is taught in Years 7 and 8. The academic program is highly supportive and features integrated approaches to learning and opportunities for personal development. Subjects such as Mathematics, where more specific scope and sequence are required, are characterised by more conventional approaches.

Personal and social development is fostered through the house system. Our pastoral care promotes tolerance, compassion, honesty and respect for one another. The College employs a qualified nurse, counsellor, chaplain and student support counsellor who work together to improve the educational and emotional outcomes for students in times of need.
