Students in Years 7 and 8 study a curriculum which lays strong foundations for further academic studies. Core subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, Japanese, and Physical Education. In addition, each student participates in Personal Development/Religious Education, Art, Design Technology, Drama, Home Economics, Information Technology/Graphics and Music.
In English, attention is paid to intensive language studies, providing a foundation of language skills upon which to guide, extend and enrich student understanding of grammar, syntax and punctuation. The curriculum offers variety with text analysis, essay writing, poetry, mythology, oral presentations, media understanding and debating.
The Mathematics program consolidates previous skills and challenges students with areas of study. Students are exposed to worded questions, group activities, applications and problem solving. As they progress, our students move from number theory, fractions and decimals to algebraic techniques such as solving equations and graphical representations.
Science in early secondary at Newhaven College introduces students to the laboratory environement, developing research skills and writing practical reports. A practical approach is applied where students can use their natural curiosity to enhance their learning, and students looks at ways to harness technology to solve problems.
Students are encouraged to work closely with teachers and ask for assistance when needed, undertake their homework regularly and make the most of the many opportunities offered at the College. Students are asked to simply to do their best – this is the greatest level of personal achievement.
