Year 7 students are given a gentle introduction to the ways of a secondary school. A range of transition programs, including a full day very early in the year, help establish a sense of belonging within their year level and House, and commence the initial friendships that will support them throughout their schooling. Peer support leaders work with small groups of students to help the new students develop contacts with their older peers.
Each Year 7 student participates in our Camp early in Term 1, experiencing a range of group activities, physical challenges and joining in ‘getting to know each other’ activities which extend their friendship groups beyond their House/Tutor community. Parents are also invited to meet their child’s Tutor, Head of House and other teachers at the College at a gathering early in Term 1.
Newhaven College students are provided with assistance to understand the organisational and administrative processes they are now part of, and subjects are clearly explained to ensure each child gains an understanding of work requirements and expectations for participation.
Students entering the College at Year 8 are supported in their transition on an individual basis by their Head of House and Tutor.
