Three Teams Win at Tournament of Minds

Three Teams Win at Tournament of Minds
Monday, 5 September 2016

Three out of five Newhaven College teams won their category at The Tournament of Minds (TOM) competition that was held at Federation University on Saturday 20 August.

The Tournament of Minds is an international competition that gives students a chance to show off their creative problem solving skills. Teams of seven students from a mix of year levels spend five to six weeks preparing a solution to a problem set by the organisers, then present their solution to a panel of judges. The solution is presented in the form of a play, and students have to write their own script, prepare their own props and costumes, and build their own sets from cardboard, paper plates and simple materials.

Newhaven’s 36 students were all a little nervous and very excited, even with a 7am departure. The teams all performed brilliantly. At the end of the day, three teams (Primary Social Science, Secondary Social Science and Secondary Science Technology) were declared winners.

The Language Literature challenge always draws the largest number of competitors, and is the most hotly contested division. The Primary Language Literature team, who came second from a field of nine, are to be congratulated for their efforts as are the Secondary team who performed very well on the day but were overcome by stiff competition.

The winning teams from the weekend’s competition will now compete in the State Final at La Trobe University in September.
