Sweet agenda for Youth Parliament

Sweet agenda for Youth Parliament
Thursday, 17 May 2018

The Newhaven College Youth Parliament Team 2018 have commenced work on their Bill, the 'Sugar Taxation and Warning Labels Bill 2018'. They are calling for a tax on goods that contain high amounts of sugar and a warning label system that indicates to consumers how much sugar is in products.

This is an important topic to the team as they have become aware that obesity levels and other diet related illnesses have increased both nationally and internationally in the last decade. Their Bill would hopefully help promote a healthier life style and also prompt healthy diet choices.

At the official opening of our new Senior School and Specialist Facility team members Declan Chisholm, Adam Dodson, Ysabel Kershaw, Indigo Donohoo and College Captain Tara Swan chatted with Federal Member for Flinders, the Hon Greg Hunt MP and Brian Paynter MP - Member for Bass.

Year 12 student Ellie Pearce was absent from the group photo as she was already engaged in an in depth discussion about the Bill with Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Pamela Rothfield. "She was very supportive of our proposed Bill and is hoping to see our team present in parliament", reported Ellie.

Congratulations to our team for their passion and willingness to act on such an important issue, we wish them all the best with their preparations.
