Philosophically Speaking
Thursday, 5 September 2019

We recently welcomed students from St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School, Gippsland Grammar and Beaconhills College Berwick Campus to Newhaven College for the first official SEISA Philosothon.

Students from Years 7–12 participated in Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections and College Captain Matisse Cousins from Newhaven’s senior team won the Senior Best Speaker Award.

A range of topics were discussed and thoughtful conversation flowed throughout the day. I was very impressed by the commitment shown by Newhaven’s Year 7 and 8 students who contributed thoughtful, energetic and in some cases very wise observations throughout the day. Good friendships across schools were formed and the conversation was of a very high standard indeed.

According to Plato, Socrates said: “I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think”. Thinking is hard work and requires the same discipline needed for athletic excellence, musical performance or artistic excellence. Newhaven has some very wise and creative thinkers and it was a delight to see their talent, courage and thoughtfulness on display during the Philosothon.
