Year 5-6 Curriculum

Newhaven College offers Year 5-6 students a range of both academic and practical experiences to ensure full engagement with their learning.

English - The curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of Language, Literature and Literacy. The teaching and learning programs balance and integrate all three strands. Together the strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating. Learning in English builds on concepts, skills and processes developed in earlier years, and teacher will revisit and strengthen these as needed.

Mathematics – The program consists of the proficiency strands Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning and are an integral part of mathematics content across the three content strands, Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. Students that require extension in Mathematics have the opportunity to be involved in our Math Olympiad program.

Science - The Australian Curriculum is divided into several domains: Science Understanding; Science as Human Endeavour (this focuses on the nature and development of Science, and the use and influence of Science); and Science Inquiry Skills.

History - Year 5 students study colonial Australia in the 1800s. Students look at the founding and development of British colonies and learn about what life was like for different groups within the colonial period. They examine significant events and people, political and economic developments, social structures, and settlement patterns. Year 6 students study the development of Australia as a nation, particularly after 1900. Students explore the factors that led to Federation and experiences of democracy and citizenship over time.

Music - In 2021, all Year 5/6 students have the opportunity to learn an instrument of their choice in a small group setting.  Visit our Music page for details.

Japanese - Students are given the opportunity to learn about Japanese culture, learn simple sentences and vocabulary in Japanese and begin to read hiragana and katakana. By the time students leave the Junior School, they will have developed a strong base on which to build on in Year Seven.

Physical Education - Year 5-6 PE program is based on extending student skills at a higher level and engaging students in Sport Education through a range of minor and major games. Within this program is the Interschool competition, where the students compete against other schools. Visit our Sport page for details.

Social Emotional Learning Program (SEL Program) - The philosophy of the SEL program is to create an innovative social-emotional program and curriculum specific to Year 5 and 6 students that addressed both the wellbeing of students (both physical and emotional) and their engagement in school through making links with the wider community.
