Sport at Newhaven College has always been an integral part of our school culture. Students are offered many opportunities to build up their skills and try new sports in our extensive sporting program or compete at House and Inter-school events.
Junior School - Prep students participate in the Perceptual Motor Program. The program incorporates gross motor activities that address the most basic movement patterns. Our Physical Education Program focuses on enabling students to participate in physical activity independently and as part of a team. Students take part in activities that build fitness levels as they work towards the development of motor skills that enable them to participate in team sports. Year 4/5 students participate in our bike education program and Year 2-4 students attend swimming lessons at the Wonthaggi YMCA pool.
Middle School - Year 5/6 Physical Education program is based on extending student skills at a higher level and engaging students in Sport Education through a range of minor and major games. Physical Education in Year 8 is based on five-week units of major sports designed to allow students to build on basic movement patterns while developing sport specific skills (e.g.; basketball lay-ups, AFL handballs). Year 9 students participate in a range of physical activities that strive to improve student fitness and involvement in outdoor activities.
Senior School - Year 10 students enjoy regular timetabled Physical Education (PE) and may take an additional PE elective. Further opportunities exist for students to elect to participate in weekly ‘SMS’ Sport. Year 11-12 students have the opportunity to study Physical Education as a VCE subject.
House Sport Carnivals involve all students from Year 5 -12, they are fun and inclusive and include Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country, Surfing and Netball events.
Year 3-6 students can participate in Athletics, Swimming, Cross-Country, Football, Soccer, Netball, Basketball, and Cricket at district, regional and state inter-school School Sport Victoria competitions. Year 7-12 students have the opportunity to participate in Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country, Football, Soccer, Netball, Basketball, Tennis, Hockey, Volleyball, Girls AFL, Table Tennis, Badminton, Bowls and Cricket during the SEISA inter-school competitions.
Our Middle and Senior school students provide guidance and leadership to younger students. Every year, two Sports Captains are selected as part of the Year 12 College Cabinet, alongside two Middle School Sport Captains (Year 9) and Vice-Captains (Year 8).
