On our website, the first thing our Principal Tony Corr says is "When you step foot on Newhaven College’s grounds, you know you’ve arrived somewhere special. " At first this is easy to think it's just about the stunning grounds and spaces, however, I felt so confident talking about our school to the 35 families who arrived to tour the school last week. As I was doing my welcome to the families I was looking at the proud and diverse range of students patiently waiting for me to finish, ready to head off and be tour guides for the next 60-90 minutes. If the families didn't instantly know they had arrived somewhere special at the beginning of the morning, they absolutely did by the end of it.
This is because our community at Newhaven is full of students coming from far and wide, interested in a multitude of things, striving for goals or still figuring it out and being encouraged to be their authentic selves. That was on display in bucket loads during the tour. Students are not told what to say, they are given the confidence to answer truthfully and let their perspective of the school shine through. Meeting the families at the end of the tour for follow up questions was an opportunity for me to see our students through the eyes of families who had just met them. Following one tour, a parent shared how impressed they were by the thoughtfulness and articulation of the student guide's responses to their questions. For me, this conversation was a powerful reminder of the quality of our students and the strength of the culture we have built together.
As Acting Principal, one of the great privileges of the role is the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of conversations across our College community. On any given day, these may be with students, staff, parents, prospective families or community members. These interactions provide a unique perspective on College life and, importantly, the opportunity to see our Strategic Plan in action through its five key pillars: Learning, Community, Sustainability, Care and Innovation.
As we approach the end of Semester One, our students have much to celebrate. Our senior students have recently completed their assessments and examinations, with our staff meticulously assessing and having rich conversations in collaborative teams. Valuable opportunities for reflection, feedback and continued growth are part of these end of semester milestones. Being with our Year 9 students at City Cite for several days was such a pleasure. Everywhere they went I had staff and organisations praising our students for their conduct and curiosity - our Year 9 team work so hard to create that positive, inclusive culture and it was on display for all to see.
During the upcoming break, seven students will travel to Sri Lanka accompanied by David Prideaux as part of our service and cultural immersion programme. Experiences such as these embody many aspects of our Strategic Plan, encouraging students to develop independence, broaden their perspectives, strengthen their understanding of community and sustainability, and engage meaningfully with the wider world.
On behalf of Tony Corr I thank our students, staff and families for their ongoing contribution to College life. Together, we continue to create a learning environment where young people are supported, challenged and inspired to thrive.
I wish all members of our community a restful and enjoyable semester break and look forward to all that Semester Two will bring.

The support and feedback provided by the College community and further afield have been incredibly positive. We thank everyone who has been in touch with their comments. Here is a sample below:
"One of my family members shared the There’s a Seat Right Here For You video on our family group chat. I just wanted to say it was such a fantastic video, and I think everyone in my family may have watched it 2 or 3 times. The song is so catchy and the video is very fun and entertaining! Newhaven looks like a lovely school, and I am sure my grandpa would have loved to have seen the wonderful video." Annabel Reith, College Founder Peter Reith’s granddaughter, Direct Message

On Wednesday 17 June, we were delighted to welcome 35 prospective families to Newhaven College for our College Tour for Term 2. These tours provide a wonderful opportunity for families to meet members of our leadership team and experience the College in action. Everyone was welcomed with morning tea at the Performing Arts Wing by Acting Principal, Karen Milkins-Hendry.
The highlight of the morning was the guided campus tour led by our student leaders from the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools. There is no better way to discover Newhaven College than through the eyes of our students, who proudly shared their experiences and insights with visiting families.
Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to our wonderful student leaders for representing the College so enthusiastically. Our next College Tour will be held on Wednesday 5 August. To register your interest, visit our website.
On Wednesday 3 June, the last day of Reconciliation Week, Newhaven College students, staff, and families gathered once again - despite chilly winds - to walk two laps of the school oval in a powerful show of solidarity and respect for First Nations Peoples. Indigenous students River Hume and Lulu Lightowler welcomed all assembled for this important occasion. A banner, painted by Year 12 Visual Arts Captain, Elsa Osabutey, led the walk.
This year’s theme of ‘All In’ is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. Reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long.
Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.
Always Was, Always Will Be
On the tail end of our Socceroos beating Türkiye in a fantastic World Cup opener, we celebrated all things World Cup with a fundraising Dress Up Day on 15 June. Everyone got into the spirit of it, and important funds were raised for our 2026 College charity Carrie's Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Foundation .
Seven intrepid Year 10 students, along with David Prideaux, have headed off to Sri Lanka this week for the service program.
Those attending are: Mackenzie Marr, Bede Prideaux, Georgie Sanders, Emma Sorensen, Stephen Spencer, Jayden Stephenson and Alayna Williams.
We wish them all the best and look forward to hearing lots of updates over the next couple of weeks!

As we are nearing the end of Pride Month, it is important for every one of us, in the community or not, to remember what Pride Month is for: equality. We hear this word every day and brush it to the side, thinking our world is good enough, but it’s not, and Pride highlights that. After all, Pride started as a protest for queer people to be seen, heard and respected, and in some parts of the world, even in more 'woke' parts of the world, we as a community still face a massive amount of discrimination. So to everyone who says “Pride is not needed anymore.”, we reply, "Yes it is."
I wish to everyone in the community, whether you’ve known your whole life, have just come out, or are still in the closet or questioning who you are: Happy Pride Month. I hope the rest of the month is filled with joy. Know there are people like you and that you are valid and loved.
Rainbow Haven meets every Gold Wednesday in the Middle School Wellbeing Space. Everyone is welcome to come along. Bring your lunch and join us in a safe, inclusive and welcoming space. For more information about why queer visibility is important, check out this video from Minus8

As we wrap up a wonderful term, it is great to see our 2026 motto, "Our propensity to embrace opportunities," reflected in different things we do. Our students, staff, and families have embraced every opportunity to learn, grow, and connect, creating a happy and supportive school community. The partnership between our school and families is a very special one, and we would like to thank our Junior School community for a positive, productive and very happy Semester 1.
Last Monday night, many of our students performed at the Winter Soiree; a special concert celebrating all the practice and dedication that goes into learning music. The talent on display was very impressive, and it was a joy to see our students shine in front of family and friends. Congratulations to everyone who took to the stage and performed. Go to the Visual & Performing Arts section of this newsletter for full report and photos.
Our Prep and Year 1 students have had a busy and memorable few weeks attending swimming lessons in Wonthaggi. We wrapped up the program with a Prep and Year 1 Swimming Carnival that was an absolute joy to watch. Our youngest students gave everything they had, in and out of the pool, and the feedback on their behaviour throughout the day was exceptional.
A big thank you to our wonderful parent helpers and to everyone who made this program possible. See full report and photos below..
Coming to school every day is one of the most important things our students can do and every day brings new learning, new friendships and a sense of belonging. Tomorrow, during our classroom visits, we will give special acknowledgement to students who have come to school nearly every single day this semester. An incredible 60 students across our Junior School have achieved this milestone. Sixty! That is something to be enormously proud of, and we look forward to celebrating with each of them.
There is always something taking shape across our grounds, and while progress brings occasional adjustment, the end result will be well worth the wait.
Following a meeting with our builders and architects, we have been advised that the original completion date for the assembly area extension and two new classrooms has been revised. We are now looking towards the new classrooms being finished in mid-August, with the assembly area on a similar timeline, though we remain hopeful the assembly area may be ready a little earlier. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we look forward to these wonderful spaces being ready for our community.
A heartfelt thank you to our Parent and Friends Association for their generous donation of six crepe myrtle trees, which will provide much-needed summer shade and further enhance our wonderful Junior School playground. These will be planted over the school holidays, and we are thankful for the kindness and funds raised through our PFA and broader community. Your generosity will make a real and lasting difference to our school environment.
Our teachers have dedicated significant time and care in preparing end-of-semester reports, drawing on a range of assessments to reflect each student's progress. These reports provide a clear summary of your child's achievement in relation to the Australian Curriculum standards, offering valuable insight into their learning journey so far. We hope you find these reports informative and helpful in understanding your child's growth.
I wish every family a lovely mid-year break and holiday. Term 3 promises another semester filled with purpose and possibility, and we look forward to welcoming our students back refreshed and ready for all that lies ahead.

As part of our Year 4 Civics and Citizenship unit about levels of government and the roles they play, our students were excited to welcome Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor Brett Tessari and Jade Glen, Manager Governance and Communications, to our classroom. The students heard all about the role of BCSC in helping to manage our local community and asked a multitude of insightful questions, including presenting some of their ideas for our community. We may have some budding councillors and future Mayors amongst our Year 4 group!

At our Term 2, Week 10 assembly, our Year 3 students, guided by the wonderful Mrs Prideaux and accompanied by Carmel Slater, performed a strings showcase that left the entire Junior School community filled with pride.
Each class performed their own piece before coming together for a combined Year 3 strings performance and the result was absolutely fantastic. What made it all the more remarkable was the knowledge that these students have been learning for just one semester. Learning an instrument takes commitment, practice and patience, and our Year 3 students made it look effortless. It was a powerful reminder of what our students can achieve when they embrace an opportunity wholeheartedly.

Today was our Junior School Disco, and free dress day. The Disco was organised by our Year 12 students (who looked like they were having as much fun as the Junior School students!) Mr T led the way with YMCA and Mrs Huther and Mrs Prideaux knew all the moves to the Macarena!
It was a fantastic way to celebrate the end of a wonderful semester. Our students enjoyed every moment!
This term, our buddy sessions have had an exciting Science focus. The Prep students have been exploring the Foundation Science topics of Moving Objects and Materials, while learning alongside their supportive Grade 6 buddies.
As part of their learning about Moving Objects, students investigated how things move in different ways, including rolling, sliding, spinning and flying. They explored how pushes and pulls can make objects start moving, stop moving or change direction. In their study of Materials, students learned that different objects are made from different materials and that materials have properties that make them suitable for particular purposes.
To bring these learning areas together, the buddies worked collaboratively to design and create their own kites. Students carefully selected from a variety of materials, discussing which ones would be strong, light and flexible enough to help their kites fly successfully. The activity provided a hands-on opportunity to apply their scientific thinking while also encouraging creativity, problem-solving and teamwork.
There was a great deal of excitement and laughter as students proudly decorated and assembled their kites. The fun continued when everyone headed outside for a wonderful afternoon of kite flying. Students eagerly tested their creations, observing how the wind helped the kites move through the air and discussing why some designs flew differently from others.
The adventure did not stop there! The buddies also enjoyed exploring our new playground together. As they climbed, balanced, swung and spun, students continued to investigate how different pieces of equipment move and work, making real-world connections to their Science learning.
Beyond the curriculum benefits, the Buddy Program provides valuable opportunities for students to develop social skills, build positive relationships and learn from one another. The Grade 6 students demonstrate leadership, patience and responsibility, while the Prep students gain confidence and a trusted friend within the school.
It has been a fantastic term of learning, laughter and friendship, and we look forward to many more buddy adventures throughout the year!

Today, Mrs Milkins-Hendy and I visited classrooms to present Home Learning Certificates for nightly reading and number fluency. The effort on display across our Junior School this term has been genuinely impressive, and we cannot wait to recognise the students who have shown such consistent commitment to their home learning habits. We look forward to continuing this recognition into Semester 2.

On Tuesday 23 June, our Prep and Year 1 students enjoyed a wonderful day at the annual P-1 Mini Swimming Carnival at Wonthaggi Indoor Pool. Students participated in a range of events including the 25m freestyle, 12m freestyle, noodle races and kickboard races, with plenty of smiles, excitement and House spirit.
It was fantastic to see every student having a go, cheering on their classmates and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and encouragement.
A huge thank you to our amazing parent helpers, our Year 8 Helpers and Year 4 House Captains who generously gave their time to assist on the day. Your support helped the carnival run so smoothly!
Well done to all of our Prep and Year 1 students on a great day in the pool and an awesome way to showcase all that you learnt in the swimming lessons from the past week.

The Year 2 mums recently enjoyed their annual catch-up, taking part in a fun pasta-making class at Pino’s Trattoria. After learning the art of making fresh pasta, the group sat down to enjoy a delicious dinner together. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, share a few laughs, and catch up over a fun and memorable activity.

As part of our Term 2 wellbeing focused on choosing kindness. Our Wellbeing Captains, Benji Ellery and Macie Oudshoorn organised a Kindness Colouring Competition for students across the Junior School.
We received many entries, with students showcasing their creativity and sharing important messages about kindness through their artwork. Choosing the winners was no easy task!
A big Congratulations to our winners: Prep: Jacob King; Year 1: Jarvis Dunk; Year 2: Emerald Northover; Year 3: Holly Pace ; and Year 4: Madison Carter
Thank you to everyone who participated. And remember: Kindness is something we can choose every day. A small act of kindness can make a big difference to someone else’s day 😊

Congratulations to the students in the following photo who were presented with their Merit Awards and recognised at Junior School Assembly.
I am a sports fan so like many people, I have been following the World Cup closely. Curacao, with approximately 158, 000 people, has the lowest population of any country in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, managed by veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat. Facing major international opponents, the veteran Dutch manager builds his tactics around a deep-lying, highly disciplined defensive structure. He sets his sides up to be compact, organised, and genuinely tough to beat. The flamboyance can wait; the foundations come first, because that is what gives his side its best chance when the stakes are highest.
In many ways, that is exactly how we approach the Middle Years at Newhaven College. Before we chase the highlight moments, our focus is on building a strong, settled foundation: an environment where every student feels safe, seen, and valued, and where nobody is easily knocked off course.
But a coach can only do so much from the sideline. The strongest teams have everyone pulling in the same direction, and that includes the people at home. The partnership between families and the College is our real squad, and it is the single biggest factor in how well our young people grow.
Schools are busy places, full of movement, momentum, and meaningful moments of growth. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Middle Years, where students in Years 5 to 8 are developing rapidly: emotionally, socially, and academically. This phase is unique. Our learners are not quite children and not yet adults, and they need both structure and space to find their feet.
That is why the connection between wellbeing and learning sits at the heart of everything we do. Strong learning simply does not happen without it. When students feel they belong, they take risks, they persevere, and they grow.
House Music has been a real focus this term, culminating in each House performing their song on the final day. It has been a wonderful chance for students to experience House spirit, teamwork, and collaboration, and I suspect they have had plenty of fun along the way. It has been especially pleasing to watch confidence grow as students stepped onto the stage. Whether for House Music or the Soirees held this term, every performer matters, from the quietest student to the most self-assured, and every moment of their journey counts.
Outside the classroom, our students have shone just as brightly. In Years 5 and 6, students have proudly represented the College at district, divisional and regional levels across a range of sports, and two at state level in the school holidays. All the best to Bridget Doig (5S) and Noah Hollings (6P) who will compete in the State Cross Country on 16 July.
In Years 7 and 8, our SEISA teams have competed with real passion and pride. Congratulations to our AFLW and Ms Davidson, Girls Basketball A and Ms Horiguchi for reaching the finals. The Girls Soccer team and Ms James had an outstanding season, premiers and undefeated throughout the season!
While success is often measured in wins, we celebrate something more valuable: teamwork, connection, and happiness. Singing together on the bus, sharing chips and lollies, smiling win or lose. These are the moments that stay with our students.
As we close the semester, I encourage you to sit down with your child and read through their report together. These reports are an important conversation between home and school, offering insight into current skill levels, progress, and areas for growth. Whatever the achievement level, please celebrate the effort behind the learning: the perseverance, the commitment, and the progress, big and small.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss any part of your child's learning, please reach out to their teachers. We value this ongoing dialogue. It is the back and forth between home and school, more than anything else, that shapes the best outcomes for your child.
Finally, I wish Shona O'Dempsey and Alycia James all the very best as they head off on Long Service Leave next term. Shona will be away for Term 3, with Sophie Fyfield stepping in to take 6OD, while Alycia will be on leave for the full semester, with Di Marshall taking her classes.
To all our families, thank you for your continued support and partnership throughout the semester. Have a safe, happy, and well-deserved break.

Year 5 and 6 students had an exciting and engaging experience participating in the Felstead Education Maths Escape Room. Working collaboratively in small teams, they applied their mathematical skills to solve a series of challenging puzzles and clues, from number patterns to logical reasoning tasks. The activity created a sense of urgency and excitement as students raced against the clock, encouraging perseverance, problem-solving, and teamwork. There was a wonderful buzz of enthusiasm throughout the room, with students celebrating each breakthrough and supporting one another along the way. Overall, the escape room provided a fun and meaningful way to reinforce mathematical concepts while building confidence and cooperation among the students.
Congratulations to the winners, Brinsley Dwyer and Hazel Jones.

Our annual Japanese Incursion once again offered meaningful cultural experiences for students. Year 7 students explored the creativity and care behind Japanese food culture through obento making, while Year 8 students participated in a Kendo workshop that highlighted discipline, respect, and purposeful movement. These activities continue to strengthen students’ cultural understanding and deepen their connection to their Japanese studies each year. Here are some of the students’ reflections.
Year 7 – Obento Making Reflections
Isla Thompson and Frankie O’Brien wrote:
“We learnt that Japanese people and parents spend a long time trying to make the best bento box. It was interesting how you can put rice in glad wrap and shape it into almost anything you want. We also found it interesting that they use stamps on the seaweed to make the eyes and mouth.”
Flynn Wright added:
“I learnt amazing skills for making rice‑ball art and even how to turn ham into a flower. It was interesting to find out that making obento can actually become a competition for parents.”
Year 8 – Kendo Reflections
Callum Lee and James Gan shared:
“Our favourite experience while trying Kendo was being able to do traditional Japanese movement. An example could be shuffling while keeping your left leg behind your right leg. Another interesting thing about Kendo is the loud shouting such as ‘MEN!’ and ‘DŌ!’.”
Cruz James and Felix Angove reflected:
“Experiencing a unique glimpse into the fighting styles of traditional Japanese culture.” “Building confidence to stand out in a memorable activity, with the ‘way of the sword’ helping us grow in an artful and powerful way.”
We are proud of the curiosity and engagement students showed throughout the incursion.

On Wednesday, our Year 7 and 8 students took part in workshops delivered by Elephant Ed, a specialist provider of evidence-based health and wellbeing education for primary and secondary students.
The sessions are mapped to the Australian Curriculum and cover key topics including puberty, respectful relationships, and online safety. This year the topics were:
• Year 7 explored Body Image
• Year 8 explored Sex & Social Media
These workshops are designed to support students in navigating consent, relationships, and online safety with confidence. We were pleased to offer students this opportunity which will equip them with the knowledge and language to make informed, respectful choices, both online and offline. A special thank you to all the presenters.
Last Wednesday 27 May, our Year 5/6 students participated in a Taiko incursion led by master Taiko player Toshi Sensei. During the session, students learnt about the history and traditions of Taiko drumming before having the opportunity to play the instruments themselves. It was an engaging, hands-on experience that was enjoyed by all, particularly students who have been part of the Newhaven College Taiko Group, who appreciated the opportunity to play alongside an experienced performer.

Our Year 7 students have truly impressed us with their recent clock-making project, showcasing some outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail. Each student carefully joined two pieces of timber together with such skill that the join became virtually invisible, perfectly matching the wood grain for a seamless, professional finish. They then put in the hard work of sanding their pieces to a smooth, flawless surface and for those who chose to add a splash of colour, their painted designs brought a wonderful personal touch to their creations. Those who opted for a natural finish applied a coat of varnish that really made the timber's beauty shine through.
The final stage saw students expertly assemble the clock mechanisms, fitting the hands with precision and placing the numbers with care to bring their timepieces to life. The finished clocks are a brilliant reflection of the effort, patience, and creativity our Year 7 students put into every step of this project. We couldn't be prouder of what they have achieved.

Congratulations to Year 5 student Parker Underwood, who has been awarded the Grey Wolf Award – the highest achievement in the Cub Scouts section of Scouts Australia. The Grey Wolf Award recognises Cubs who have demonstrated outstanding commitment, resilience, leadership, teamwork and personal growth throughout their Scouting journey. Earning this prestigious award requires completing a wide range of challenges, outdoor adventures, community service and developing valuable life skills.
This is a fantastic accomplishment, and we congratulate Parker on this well-deserved recognition.
The past few weeks have been action-packed within the Senior School. What began as Examination Week for our Year 9, 10 and 11 students soon gave way to the start of Unit 2 coursework for Year 11, Work Experience for Year 10 and CityCITE for Year 9, and that is only what has unfolded within the classroom.
Whilst examinations do not determine success or failure in any subject, they are an important inflection point for every student. For our Year 9 students, they help us gauge a student’s readiness to accelerate into a Unit 1/2 subject when subject selections come around early in Term 3, as we look ahead to 2027. For Year 10 students, a full suite of examinations offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on the first semester, take stock of their efforts and consider honestly whether their output reflects the work they have put in. For Year 11 students, the examinations inform important decisions ahead, helping to solidify their academic pathway and confirm subjects for the demanding Year 12 schedule to come.
Last week, every student in Year 11 or 12 studying at least one Unit 3/4 VCE subject sat the GAT, a long and demanding series of tests that helps set the scene for what lies ahead in October and November. Whilst the GAT does not determine success or failure, it does make clear the expectations that await each student. On the same day, those Year 10 students not on Work Experience enjoyed a wonderful Forum Day, taking part in workshops across three important themes: Teen Mental Health, Respectful Relationships and Financial Literacy. Every student present was engaged and a credit to Newhaven College. Days such as these offer rich learning beyond the classroom, and I would warmly encourage all families to make the most of them whenever they are on offer.
Last week also brought a musical showcase, with the Winter Soiree opening the week. We were treated to over two hours of performances from musicians ranging from Year 1 through to Year 12, a real treat for the senses. Two nights later, our Year 2 VET Music students took to the stage and once again showcased their considerable talents. The week was rounded out with a wonderful, immersive experience for our Year 11 students: the RYDA Road Safety program, which teaches young people some important lessons about road safety as they begin to take the wheel. See the photos after my report.
We now find ourselves in the final week of Term 2, with the three-week break fast approaching. For many, it is a welcome chance to get away, rest and reflect on the semester that was. For our Year 12 students, the reality is a little starker: from the first day of Term 3, only 43 school days remain until the end of what is often called the big learning term, followed by just 12 days in the final term before they depart on study leave ahead of their VCE examinations.
I encourage all Senior School students to reflect honestly on their efforts over the first semester. Where there is room to grow, now is the time to revisit expectations and priorities, because Term 3 promises to be the busiest and most demanding term of the year. Alongside a heavy academic load, the winter SEISA sport season is now upon us. I look forward to seeing how each of our teams performs in the term ahead, and to watching our students approach both their learning and their sport with purpose and commitment.
On behalf of the Senior School, I wish every Newhaven College family a happy and restful holiday. I look forward to welcoming all of our students back with renewed energy and determination as we begin the new term together.

The Year 12 Leadership group has been quietly hard at work throughout the semester, raising money for their chosen charity, Beanies for Brain Cancer. On Friday evening they hosted the annual Year 12 Family Trivia Night. A wonderful turnout from our Year 12 families made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. The final result was a little controversial, with the teachers’ table emerging victorious, though that is perhaps the natural consequence of a round devoted entirely to ‘The Teachers’. We discovered that we do indeed know one another rather well!

Three students from Newhaven College were among those honoured at a prestigious Gold Level Reception hosted at Government House, Melbourne.
Current Year 12 students Michaela Marr and Tilly Stecher, along with Newhaven College graduate Tom Bird, were formally recognised for their outstanding achievement in completing the Gold level of The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award at a special reception held at Government House, Melbourne, on Thursday 4 June 2026.The ceremony brought together young achievers and their supporters in the grand surrounds of Government House - a fitting setting to mark one of the most highly regarded youth achievement awards in the world.
Representing Newhaven College were DofE Co-ordinator Ann-Marie McLean and Brett Torstonson, Head of Senior School, who attended on behalf of the College to celebrate this milestone achievement of its students.
The Gold Award - the highest level of the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award program - requires young people to demonstrate commitment across a range of challenging activities including volunteering, physical endeavour, skill development and an adventurous journey. Achieving the Gold standard is a testament to the dedication, resilience and character of each recipient.

Over several weeks, Vocational Major students have participated in an exciting hands on project where they designed and developed their own pizza concepts from scratch. Throughout the unit, students investigated ingredients, nutrition, flavour combinations and food preparation techniques before creating, cooking and evaluating their own original pizza recipes. They also designed professional pizza menus to showcase their products.
Students explored the design and construction of pizza ovens, researching suitable materials, heat retention, sustainability and safety considerations. Alongside this, they investigated how successful food businesses operate, examining areas such as marketing, budgeting, customer preferences and business planning. Positive images and communication online.
The project provided authentic opportunities to develop Numeracy, Literacy, Personal Development and Work Related Skills in a practical real-world context.
Working closely with their teachers and our Food Technology, Art, Maintenance and Grounds Team, students gained valuable insights into construction, materials, design and project planning. We are incredibly grateful for the various teams' ongoing support and willingness to contribute to meaningful student learning experiences.
As part of the project, students developed a comprehensive business proposal that included a budget, marketing strategy, risk assessment and plans for running a school-based pizza incursion. They carefully considered food safety requirements, equipment needs, supervision and risk management processes. Students completed their Food Safety Certificate in preparation for handling food and to prepare them for the future.

Our first-year construction students are now undertaking the new Certificate II Construction Pathways. This exciting program consists of 12 modules, (UOCs - Units of Competency), 11 of these are Nationally Accredited, which means they must be accepted for apprenticeship training if they align with the apprenticeship program.
This is not about the projects they make, it's how they go about constructing them, the tools and equipment used, and the skills demonstrated. All of this must meet the UOC requirements.
While constructing the mini saw stool and the foot stool, along with hand tools, the students used Battery and Powered equipment: Drop Saw, Compound Mitre Slide Saw, Portable Circular Saw, Planner, Router/Trimmer, Jigsaw, Orbital Sander, Belt Sander, Drill, Impact Driver, Drill Press, Nail Gun (gas) and Nail Gun (battery).
These are great skills to take into future apprenticeships, or general life skills!

Year 10 students Heath McLean went to work with the team at Free 3D Hands in Newhaven. Andy from Free3D Hands said, "Heath did the college proud and was engaged in all tasks we set for him and was very easy to work with. We had him designing in CAD, printing 3D parts, some assembly and working with some electronics. He was a pleasure to have on our team for the week."
The Careers Team has worked with Year 10 students to secure their placements during the last two weeks of Term 2.
This year we have approximately 40 students out in their chosen workplace, gaining valuable experience in the real world of employment.

Our recent two-day Surf Safety and Rec camp served as the ultimate practical exam for the Year 10 subject, Surf Safety and Recreation. The camp pushed students to translate a semester's worth of preparation and learning into tangible lifesaving capabilities. Day one focused on the rigorous technical demands of the SLS Bronze Medallion, with students completing assessments in dynamic water rescues, communication, beach management, and First Aid. After winding down with a family dinner, a Mario Kart tournament and a competitive trivia night, students stayed overnight at the WBSLSC before kicking off day two with a sunrise walk to the Pinnacles. The second day shifted focus to the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART) award, equipping students with skills in advanced oxygen therapy, high-quality resuscitation, and complex bleeding management. The culmination of the camp was a surprise high-pressure, realistic car crash simulation. Under immense pressure, from disoriented, pain-stricken patients, frantic bystanders, and evolving medical requirements, the students demonstrated incredible composure, teamwork and First Aid skills to manage the scene and prove themselves capable future lifesavers.
Newhaven College would like to acknowledge WBSLSC for its ongoing contributions to this program's successful delivery and for hosting us at the club for our first-ever Bronze Camp.
Secondly, thank you to Lysa Jayne Kiely for her special effects makeup that added the gold standard of realism for the students' final scenario.

Term 2 has been a strong and rewarding term for Year 9, with students engaging in a wide range of learning experiences, challenges and opportunities for growth.
The term culminated in our City Cite programme, where we were fortunate to enjoy fabulous weather and some truly unique experiences across Melbourne. Students had the opportunity to see and engage with the good, the bad, the ugly and, of course, the 7-Eleven Slurpees. City Cite continues to be a valuable part of the Year 9 experience, giving students the chance to develop independence, confidence and a deeper understanding of the world around them. City Cite staff continually complimented how excellent our students were throughout the 2-week programme.
Commando Games was again a real spectacle, with what may have been our muddiest mud run yet. It was fantastic to see students throw themselves into the day with energy, humour and teamwork. Term 2 also saw students complete their first Year 9 exams, an important milestone as they continue to develop their study habits, preparation skills and resilience.
Many students will look back on this semester as one that has been challenging, busy and full of new experiences. I encourage all students to use the break as a chance to rest, but also to reflect on what they have learnt about themselves and how they would like to approach Semester 2.
I would like to sincerely thank our Year 9 pastoral team, Anna Paterson, Ryan Gingell, Siobhan Jagusch and Simon Furniss, for their care, support and commitment throughout the semester. We look forward to their continued support for the remainder of the year. In Term 3, Year 9 will also welcome back Corinne Phillips from maternity leave, and we are excited to have her return to the team.
I wish all Year 9 families a restful and safe break, and I look forward to seeing students return refreshed and ready for Term 3.

Head of Year 9
Last Thursday was a day of mud, mayhem, and muscle! Our fearless Year 9s took on the Commando Games, a wild obstacle adventure packed with challenges testing strength, teamwork, and determination. They cheered each other on in a way that would make any parent proud!
Soaked, muddy, and absolutely unstoppable, they powered through every twist and turn with grit, laughs, and plenty of chaos. Cold toes, muddy clothes, and huge smiles all round - an unforgettable day of fun and resilience!
Brew Haven Cafe celebrated its grand opening last week, marking the successful launch of a student-based initiative that has been years in the making. Year 9 and Year 10 Food Studies students played a central role in cooking and catering for the event, showcasing their developing hospitality and catering skills.
Under the guidance of Meagan Hollings, students planned the menu, prepared the luncheon, and operated the cafe in a highly professional manner. The project has taken two years to develop, with commercial equipment needing to be purchased and students undertaking extensive skill development in food preparation and service.
Brew Haven will operate once a fortnight, offering a menu that caters to vegetarians and gluten-free diners. Excitingly, there are plans for further developments and expanded offerings in the future, making Brew Haven a wonderful addition to the school community.

We have been treated to an abundance of wonderful music across the College over the past few weeks. Last Monday, we held our Winter Soirées, showcasing the talent and dedication of our music students.
In the Rehearsal Hall, our piano, guitar, brass and woodwind students entertained a full-house audience with a diverse and engaging program, expertly hosted by Middle School Music Captain, Michael Christofi. Meanwhile, in the Black Box Theatre, our vocal and string students delivered outstanding performances under the capable leadership of Senior Music Captain, Aoife O’Connell.
Congratulations to all performers, from Prep through to Year 12, for their hard work and musical achievements. Our Soirées are open to all Newhaven College students, regardless of whether they receive tuition through the College. If your child would like to perform at our Spring Soirée later this year, please contact the Music Department. See some photos below of this event.

Early next term, our combined Senior Vocal Ensemble and Middle School Choir will also compete at the Yarram Eisteddfod. We are confident they will represent the College with distinction.
Students interested in joining an ensemble or vocal group are warmly encouraged to become involved. Participation opens the door to a wide range of exciting experiences, including camps, festivals, performances and collaborative music-making opportunities throughout the year.

Kick Start Program for new students starting Year 7 in 2026. We offer a semester of free small group instrumental lessons on the standard orchestral instruments. The purpose of this program is to provide new students with some of the opportunities existing students have had in music throughout Year 5/6 and encourage students to experience all the great things about learning an instrument. We provide the instrument free of charge for the semester, so no need to hire or buy. Just a free chance at trying something new and different.
Students taking up this opportunity will come out of regular classes on a rotational basis for the semester to avoid missing the same class time. Under some circumstances, the instrumental lesson could be scheduled at recess, lunchtime or after school, depending on teacher availability.
If you would like your child to take up this offer, please complete the registration form.

Year 9 Art has finished the semester strongly, completing a stencil workshop and printing their own T-shirts. The students had a range of inspirations, from Led Zeppelin to Winnie the Pooh, and pop culture celebrities who featured heavily. The aim was to gain practical experience in silk screen printing, but also using stencils, mirroring modern street art techniques. The results have been amazing!
Congratulations to all the students involved.

We have had an exciting term of Junior SEISA sports, with every team giving it their all.
The Girls Soccer Team made it to the finals on Thursday, 18 June, and delivered a performance to remember.
From the outset, they faced fierce competition from Beaconhills Berwick, whose defence proved difficult to break down in the first half. Despite numerous valiant attempts on goal, the Beaconhills backline held firm, repelling every effort. Newhaven's own defensive line was equally resolute, maintaining a strong wall and consistently returning the ball to their midfielders and strikers.
With scores level at zero heading into the final minutes, the game seemed destined for a tense finish - until Aylah Strickland and Edie Rowbottom stepped up to deliver. Their late goals sealed an exhilarating victory and rewarded a team effort built on hard work and determination throughout the match.
Congratulations to all players on a well-earned win.

On Friday 29 May, 17 boys from Years 5 and 6 travelled to Wonthaggi for the District Netball competition. The two teams each played 5 games throughout the day. The A team, competently led by Noah Hollings and Cooper Bennett, played a very tight game for their first game against Bass Valley Primary, going down by one goal. Newhaven College comfortably won the next two games before losing against St Joe's in the fourth game of the day. The final game for the A team was against Cowes Primary School. It was goal for goal with a draw on the final whistle.
The B team were on a high all day, winning every game they played. Thank you to Amy Cattermole for coaching the B team.
Both teams did themselves proud, displaying exceptional sportsmanship along with some incredible netball skills. Every player stood out at different times throughout the day, and they all improved every game.

Our Year 5/6 Girls AFL team represented Newhaven College with pride at the District AFLW Competition in Wonthaggi on May 29th.
The girls showed outstanding determination and teamwork throughout the day, improving remarkably with every match they played. They competed against Bass Valley, Cowes, St Joseph’s Wonthaggi, Wonthaggi Primary School and Wonthaggi North Primary School, finishing the day with an excellent record of two wins, two losses and one draw.
There were many highlights across the competition. Sage was outstanding in front of goal, while Gabby impressed with her tough and fearless attack on the football. Rose and Tameka were rock-solid in defence, consistently stopping opposition attacks and creating opportunities for their teammates. Evie F also had an excellent day, taking strong marks and delivering effective handballs around the ground.
Most pleasing was the way the girls continued to learn, adapt and improve throughout the day!
A huge thank you to Noah Martin-Endress for coaching the team and providing valuable feedback and guidance throughout the day. His support and expertise were greatly appreciated by the players.

On Friday 12 June, our Newhaven College boys and girls soccer teams travelled to the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve to compete in the District Soccer competition. Played in beautiful sunshine, both teams demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and teamwork.
A huge thank you to our coaches, Noah Martin-Endress, Elissa Davidson and Stacey Fisher, for generously giving their time and support. We would also like to acknowledge the Wonthaggi Soccer Club for assisting in hosting the event, as well as the student referees who assisted throughout the day.
The girls had an exceptional tournament, narrowly missing out on progressing to the Division Finals. After recording one win and two draws, they missed qualification on a countback, a fantastic effort by the entire team. Special mention goes to Gabrielle Titmarsh for her excellent leadership, Chelsea Chambers for her outstanding goalkeeping and defensive efforts throughout the day, and all players for their hard work and commitment on the field.
The boys faced some very strong opposition and, despite not recording a win, showed incredible resilience, teamwork and positivity in every match. They should be proud of the way they represented Newhaven College.

Our partnership with the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club is truly making waves, and we couldn't be prouder to see such an incredible Newhaven College presence at the recent club awards night! Our Surf, Safety, and Recreation elective is built around inspiring the next generation of lifesavers, but it’s our people on the beaches who really make the magic happen.
Pictured left to right: Ben Clark (Head of Surfing and Middle School Clarke House) took home the Excellence in Lifesaving Award, Kadek Humphris earned the Norm Ritchie Memorial Award plus top honors for senior male volunteer hours, Archer Cameron nabbed Most Improved and top junior male volunteer hours, Chloe Hosking was also celebrated as a Most Improved Member, and Piper O’Brien was recognised as the Most Outstanding Junior Female. The Newhaven College MTB Academy has continued its outstanding 2026 season, with riders producing another impressive performance at Round 2 of the AusCycling Victorian Schools MTB Series at Lysterfield.
Despite freezing temperatures, intermittent showers and a wet course, Academy riders embraced the challenging conditions and once again showcased the determination and resilience that has become a hallmark of the team.
Leading the way was Austin Mitchell, who secured a fantastic 1st place in the Under 13 Boys Novice category. After consistently knocking on the door of a podium finish, Austin’s hard work and dedication paid off with a well-deserved victory.
Academy Captain Hamish Dakers-Hock also delivered an outstanding ride, finishing 3rd in the Under 17 Boys. Hamish looked set for an even stronger result before a mechanical issue on the final lap cost him a position, making his podium finish all the more impressive.
Adding to the celebrations, Felix Boyce claimed 3rd place in the Under 9 Boys, earning the first podium finish of his young mountain biking career and highlighting the exciting talent emerging through the Academy.
Also an honorable mention to Evelyn McCabe, achieving 4th place in the Under 13 Girls.
The performances at Lysterfield reflect the strength, sportsmanship and team culture that continues to grow within the Newhaven College MTB Academy. Riders supported one another throughout the day and proudly represented the College both on and off the course.
Congratulations to Austin, Hamish and Felix on their fantastic achievements. The Academy now looks ahead to the next round in Ballarat, eager to build on an excellent start to the season.
Cold temperatures, drizzle and a smaller-than-usual field couldn’t dampen the spirits of the Newhaven College MTB Academy, with three riders producing outstanding results at Round 3 of the AusCycling Cross Country Series in Ballarat.
Competing on a wet and slow course, our riders showed resilience, determination and sportsmanship in challenging conditions.
Felix Boyce continued his impressive season, claiming the top step of the podium with a fantastic victory in the Under 9 Boys division. His confidence and skill continue to grow with every race.
Austin Mitchell maintained his excellent form in the Under 13 Boys category, securing a well-earned second place and reinforcing his reputation as one of the series’ most consistent competitors.
Academy Captain Hamish Dakers-Hock also delivered a strong performance, finishing fourth in the highly competitive Under 17 Boys division.
The Newhaven College MTB Academy is incredibly proud of the commitment and perseverance shown by all three riders. Their achievements are a reflection of the hard work they put into training and the supportive culture within the Academy.
We congratulate Felix, Austin and Hamish on their outstanding efforts and wish them all the best as they prepare for Round 4 at Haunted Hills along with the rest of the team.

Newhaven College students Georgia Mills (Year 11) and Yasmin Gloria (Year 10) have enjoyed outstanding success at the 2026 Volleyball Victoria Country Championships in Bendigo, helping South Gippsland Volleyball Club secure a bronze medal in the Division 3 Women’s competition.
Competing against some of Victoria’s strongest regional teams over the King’s Birthday long weekend, both students played important roles in their team’s success.
Yasmin’s exceptional tournament was recognised with two individual honours, being named Division 3 Women’s MVP and Best Libero, acknowledging her as the competition’s leading defensive player.
Congratulations to Georgia and Yasmin on their achievements and for representing South Gippsland Volleyball Club with skill, determination and sportsmanship.
