Celebrating the Arts

The past fortnight has seen a vibrant celebration of the arts at Newhaven. Our annual Spring Music Concert at the Wonthaggi Arts Centre showcased musical prowess throughout the school. This was followed by the dynamic VET contemporary bands evening where our senior students took the stage with passion and originality. I could not have been more impressed with the energy, talent, and dedication shown by our students across all year levels.

This week we also saw the culmination of many years of study with our VCE Music Soiree and VCE Theatre Studies Monologue evenings. Students presented highly refined pieces as a trial for their end of year performance examinations. Across the board they were of an excellent quality and reflected the talent and hard work of the students and their teachers over a number of years. They also highlighted the arts are not a mere extracurricular option but a vital thread woven into the fabric of our school. Our high participation rate of students is testament to the value our community places on creativity and self-expression.

In addition to these evenings the Junior School was full of colour on Wednesday afternoon with the Junior School Art Show, whilst the foyer of the Performing Arts Wing has been showcasing some exceptional student work as part of the House Art competition. All these arts events play an integral role in developing well-rounded learners. Through music, drama and visual art students learn to listen, adapt, create and communicate with clarity and empathy—skills that resonate far beyond the stage, studio or rehearsal room. Whether mastering an instrument, singing in a choir, painting a canvas or stepping into character for a dramatic monologue, students build resilience and confidence whilst developing their own identity.

The arts also stimulate academic, social, and emotional growth. Studies show that engagement in the arts enhances cognitive development, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence. Our students who take part in festivals, exhibitions and performances bring back not only accolades but an increased sense of self-worth.

Despite so many events at the end of this term our vibrant arts programme does not slow down. Our inaugural Middle School production rehearsals are currently underway, we will be soon commencing auditions for next year’s College Musical and our VCE Visual Arts Exhibition will be on in the second week of next term. As a school we know that every one of these events helps our students become the best versions of themselves whilst also being a celebration of diversity and creativity.

I would like to wish all of our Newhaven families an enjoyable term break.

R U OK? Day at Newhaven College

Last Thursday Junior School led a special Wellbeing Lunch Club to mark R U OK? Day. Wellbeing Captains, Savannah James and Indy van Damme and students from across the College joined in a range of activities, including the ever-popular chance to leave colourful and creative messages on the Junior School windows. It was a wonderful way to pause, connect, and remind each other of the importance of checking in with friends.

To continue the spirit of the day, our Year 12 students and staff enjoyed a coffee van visit on Thursday afternoon. While a week later than the national day, it provided the perfect opportunity to gather together, share a conversation, and enjoy a well-earned treat.

Celebrating Our Incredible Learning Support Aides

Last week, during Teacher Aide Appreciation Week, we recognised the outstanding work of our Learning Support Aides. Their patience, care, and dedication enriched the lives of our students and strengthened the fabric of our College community.

From offering quiet encouragement to celebrating student successes, and from fostering inclusion to providing vital classroom support, their impact was both profound and lasting.

On behalf of the entire Newhaven College staff, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our Learning Support Aides. Our classrooms were brighter, kinder, and more supportive because of you.

With gratitude,
Kurt, Ruth, Cynthia, Kim, and the Newhaven College staff

Wear it Purple Day

On Friday 29 August we celebrated Wear it Purple day in Middle school. This day recognizes young LGBTQIA+ people and encourages all students to express their authentic themselves. The selfie booth was awash with fairy wings, hats and all things purple.

SEISA Chess Competition

On Tuesday the 12th of August, Scarlette, Mathew, Ayden, Mackenzie, Steven, and Cruz proudly represented the Newhaven College at the SEISA Chess Competition held at Gippsland Grammar. The atmosphere was electric, with strong competition between schools and every student striving for victory in their rounds. Each of our players approached the challenge with focus and determination, demonstrating both skill and sportsmanship throughout the day. Mackenzie was particularly driven in his matches and came incredibly close to earning a SEISA ribbon, missing out by only the narrowest of margins. Importantly, every member of the team achieved at least one win across their rounds, a fantastic effort that left smiles shining on their faces. Beyond the results, what stood out most was the way the students supported one another—celebrating each success and encouraging each other through tougher matches. The team spirit, perseverance, and enthusiasm displayed made the day a memorable and rewarding experience for all.

SEISA Junior Debating Competition

On the same day, Harshaam, Michael, Jordy, and McKenzie participated enthusiastically in the SEISA Junior Debating Competition. In preparation, the team dedicated time each Friday during Term 2 to learn debating techniques and master their positions. This thorough preparation ensured they were ready and focused, confidently presenting arguments and rebuttals as they engaged with the opposing team on the motion: “All students should have to participate in an overseas exchange.” As the affirmative team, they faced the challenge of arguing a position that was somewhat harder to defend, but they organised their rebuttals carefully and approached each round with determination. Each student proudly took their position, and as a team, they debated with poise, skill, and confidence. Special thanks are due to Michael, who graciously took on the role of support team member, providing guidance and encouragement even though he did not actively debate on the day.

SEISA Senior Debating Competition

by Tilly Stecher

On the 12th of August, I competed at SEISA debating alongside my teammates Matilda Feehan and Jasmine Ruffin at Gippsland Grammar in Sale. Having worked closely together earlier in the year, we were well-prepared and collaborated effectively. As a senior team, our debate topic was only revealed on the day. Our secret debate topic was, “Should the government regulate screen time?” We were assigned the affirmative side and had just one hour to prepare for our debate. Jasmine opened the debate as first speaker, followed by Matilda and I as second and third speakers. In the end it was an incredibly close contest. St Paul’s Warragul narrowly won with a score of 224 to our 223. This happened to be the highest scoring senior debate of the day, leaving us in second place overall, a huge improvement since last year. Beyond the results, the day was an incredible opportunity to build our speaking skills and meet like-minded students. Unlike many other SEISA events, SEISA debating gives you the opportunity to truly connect and get to know students from other schools. Overall, the experience inspired us to continue improving our skills and return next year, aiming for the win.

Mr Chris Holt

We share below a heartfelt tribute from our founding Principal, Mr Frank Moore, honouring the life and lasting impact of Chris Holt, a founding staff member of Newhaven College.

Chris Holt died on the 2nd September in the UK. He was a founding member of staff who taught at the college from 1981 – 1984. He was one of a small group of teachers who established the ethos of Newhaven College in its first five years. He introduced and set up the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. He led the first school camp to the Cumberland River Gorge near Lorne. He was an inspired all-round teacher who was Master-in-charge of the original Years 7 and 8 Woody Point school. He had all the qualities of an old-fashioned Regimental Sergeant Major. He would line up the Year 7 and 8s every morning and inspect their shoes. His blackboard writing was a kind of copperplate calligraphy. It was he who named the first staff building, ‘The Bridge’ and prepared the signboard. The first 100 students loved him for his tongue-in-cheek humour. He was married to Anne Holt who subsequently put Newhaven on the map as a leading drama school. He has two step-daughters: Odilla and Grainne O’Boyle and one son, Martin Holt, a teacher in Melbourne. We wish them all love and peace.

CATH HUTHER
Head of Junior School

As Term 3 draws to a close, the Junior School has been filled with energy from start to finish. Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the whole school Spring Concert, a remarkable celebration of hard work, dedication and talent. With performances from our Year 4 Strings, Junior School Choir, taiko drums, orchestra and guitar ensemble, the evening was especially memorable. The standard of musical ability was outstanding, and it was wonderful to see our students shine on stage. Opportunities like these not only showcase their talents but also highlight the strength of our music program. We are fortunate to offer experiences of this calibre to our students, and it is a privilege to celebrate their achievements together as a community.

Dads and Donuts

Our Junior School recently hosted the Dads and Donuts Morning, a celebration of the important role that dads and special people play in our students lives. The children loved having the opportunity to welcome someone special into the school and share the morning together. It was a wonderful chance to strengthen the partnerships between home and school, while also creating memorable moments for families. Events like these highlight the strength of the Newhaven College community, bringing people together and celebrating the connections we share with our students.

R U OK Day

To mark R U OK Day, we held a special Wellbeing Lunchtime Club for our Junior School students. The assembly area was filled with fun games and activities that brought students together in support of this important cause. A highlight for many was the chance to write warm, heartfelt messages on the windows of our Junior School assembly space. These messages reflected positivity, kindness, hope, encouragement and gratitude, the qualities we continually aim to nurture through our positive behaviour expectations - The Newhaven Way. Thank you to Sarah Derham from our Wellbeing team for organising this initiative. Our students came together with kindness and care, showing how small actions can make a big difference in supporting one another.

Growing Together: A Third Year 3 Class in 2026

Due to our Junior School enrolments being at capacity, and with a growing waiting list, we are excited to announce that next year we will be introducing a third Year 3 class. Enrolments continue to be very strong, which reflects our reputation and the many wonderful opportunities offered here at Newhaven College. In 2026, there will be two classes across each year level in the Junior School, apart from Year 3, which will have three classes. This growth highlights the confidence families place in our school and the supportive, engaging learning environment we are proud to provide.

Year 3 Camp Adventure at Candlebark Farm

From Wednesday 3 to Friday 5 September, our Year 3 students set off on their very first school camp to Candlebark Farm in Healesville — an unforgettable adventure filled with fun, learning, and lots of laughter!

Our first stop on the way was the Healesville Sanctuary, where we were treated to an incredible “Birds in Flight” show and got up close with some amazing native Australian animals. One of the highlights (and surprises!) was a cheeky Tasmanian Devil who managed to snatch a student’s camera after it accidentally fell over the railing — much to everyone’s shock and amusement!

Day two at the farm was packed with action as students rotated through a range of exciting activities including the low ropes course, flying fox, Gaga ball, rock climbing wall, and various team games. It was inspiring to see our Year 3s stepping out of their comfort zones, showing courage, teamwork, and determination as they gave everything a go!

Mealtimes were a treat, with delicious home-cooked meals like lasagna, roast beef, and apple crumble. Students also took part in kitchen duties and worked hard to keep their cabins tidy and ready for daily inspections.

On our final day, after packing up and saying goodbye to Candlebark Farm, we stopped at Bellevue Apple Orchard. There, we enjoyed freshly picked apples, tasted apple juice, and learned all about how apples are grown — a sweet end to an incredible trip.

A big thank you to all the parents and staff who came and supported the year 3 camp.

What a wonderful first camp experience for Year 3 — one we’ll remember for years to come!

Junior School Art Show

On Wednesday night, our Assembly area was filled with the incredible artwork created by our Junior School students throughout the year. The Art Show, attended by families and friends, was a wonderful celebration of the creativity and opportunities our students enjoy as part of the Junior School art program. Proud families walked through the exhibition with their children, who shared insights about their pieces and what they had learned. Adding to the atmosphere, some of our students provided a beautiful music backdrop with piano and violin performances. It was inspiring to see the ways students were able to creatively express themselves through art. While each piece explored similar themes, every work was unique, individual, and expressive. The students’ creations were inspired by artists such as Henri Matisse, Gustav Klimt, and Melanie Hava, as well as by nature and personal experiences. Highlights included “About Me” portraits, printmaking, papier-mâché and clay sculptures, oil pastel wave resist, colour-play landscapes, cubist portraits, and playful pieces like “Ice Cream Face.” A huge thank you to Mrs Chadwick, our Junior School Art teacher, for creating such a vibrant and imaginative Art Show filled with colour, creativity, and inspiration.

Home Learning Habits Awards

Mr Corr and I have loved celebrating the wonderful learning happening both at school and at home through our Home Learning Habits Awards and Certificates. These awards recognise students’ dedication to their reading and number fluency home learning programs. We are so impressed with our students’ nightly home learning routines, and it has been wonderful to see the support, encouragement, and collaboration from families. The strong partnership between home and school is making a real difference in each child’s learning journey. Next term, we look forward to continuing to recognise students who consistently demonstrate positive home learning habits. It was a huge achievement to see 100% of the Prep cohort receive a certificate this term, and it lays a strong foundation for future learning.

Our goal for Term 4 is to see 100% of students in every class earn a certificate. With the continued support of families, we know this will be a positive and rewarding experience for all students.

Merit Awards

Congratulations to the students in the following photo who were presented with their Merit Awards and recognised at Junior School Assembly.

This term has been incredibly productive, marked by growth, learning, and memorable experiences. As we look ahead to next term, we have an exciting lineup of events and activities to further enrich our students' learning experiences. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable break, and I look forward to Term 4.

Warm regards,

Author Visit - Adam Wallace

On Thursday 11 September students from Prep – Year 6 were fortunate to have author and cartoonist Adam Wallace from Melbourne visit Junior School. Adam shared his energetic enthusiasm for writing children’s books and discussed different strategies that are useful when creating fictional stories. Both sessions were very interactive, and students were taught how to draw several cartoon characters. Adam’s books can be borrowed from the library, and he is well known for his ‘How to Catch’ series of Picture Story Books as well as his Fartboy series. The feedback from students was very positive and we were lucky to have such a successful author spend time with us.

Author Visit - Yvonne Bornstein

On Monday 15 September, Yvonne Bornstein, Author, Illustrator and Speaker, attended the library and read her picture story book titled 'Evee's Farm' to Junior School students. Her beautifully illustrated book combined characters inspired by life on her farm as well as spectacular water colour images. Students listened intently to Yvonne reading and asked several questions about how books are published and the writing process.

End of the Premiership Term

As we finish Term 3 often called the premiership term there is much to acknowledge and celebrate. This has been a time of significant growth, not just in academics, but also in the physical, social, and emotional development of our students. Each child has progressed at their own pace, and it has been pleasing to see their efforts turn into meaningful steps forward. Big wins don’t happen without the small steps along the way, and it is important that we recognise the journey as much as the outcome.

As staff, we know the standards we set and prioritise have a lasting impact. By setting high but realistic expectations, we encourage our students to strive for their best. When mistakes are embraced as opportunities to learn, we foster creativity, resilience, and trust - skills that will serve them well beyond their school years.

This term we also held Information Evenings for Year 7 (2026) and Year 9 (2026). Both nights were well attended and strongly supported by students and parents. Sharing the unique characteristics and opportunities within each year level not only provides reassurance but also builds a sense of anticipation and excitement for the next stage of learning.

Middle School Leadership Process

Looking ahead, next term we begin the process of selecting Middle School leaders for 2026. All Year 7 students who would like to be considered for a leadership role will be invited to submit a written application to me. In their letters, they will outline the personal qualities and skills they believe would make them an asset as a Middle School leader. Shortlisted candidates will then be interviewed by their Heads of House and myself.

I would like to thank our students, their parents, and our dedicated staff for their care, commitment, and hard work throughout this busy term. Wishing everyone a safe, restful holiday break and best of luck to your AFL team if they’re still in the running!

See you for the start of Term 4 on Monday, 6 October 2025.

Year 6 Camp

The drizzling rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of our Year 6 on day one of Coolamatong. Divided into two groups, one set off on an expedition involving tent set up, camp cooking and combat archery. Meanwhile, back at base camp, others had team Building and bush cooking, then canoeing. Some had more sleep than others but everyone was happy to see blue sky this morning.

Dream City Delivers Career Adventures for Year 5 Students!

Our Year 5 students recently dived into the exciting world of careers with a special incursion from DreamCity.

They became Robotic Engineers using Sphero RVR robots and Samsung tablets, learning coding through hands-on activities with Sphero Edu software. Students programmed their robots to move, light up, and make sounds, gaining real insight into digital systems and robotics. They also explored Virtual Reality and discovered how VR technology is used across different industries to solve problems and enhance support work in specific industries.

Our students also stepped into the shoes of Neonatal Nurses, with high-tech infant simulators. They learned about the qualities of employees in the health care sector—like empathy and patience—while getting hands-on experience with holding, rocking, and feeding baby simulators.

This immersive experience sparked curiosity about exciting career possibilities in technology and health care.

Term 3 Reflections at Newhaven College:
A Season of Achievement, Challenge, and Community

Term 3 at Newhaven College has been an especially vibrant and memorable period, marked by a blend of athletic triumphs, academic rigor, and artistic brilliance. For students and staff alike, the past months have been a tapestry of spirited competition, personal growth, and communal celebration, all of which have contributed to the distinctive character of our College.

Academically, Term 3 presented significant challenges, particularly for our Year 12 cohort. With numerous SACs across a wide range of subjects, time management and resilience became essential skills. The approach of Trial Examinations in less than two weeks marks another step in an intense academic journey, with the final term promising to be astonishingly brief for our graduating students. The rigors extended to Year 11 students enrolled in Unit 3/4 VCE subjects, who have had to rise to meet senior-level expectations. Meanwhile, our Year 9 and 10 students are encouraged to look up to these examples, striving to equal or exceed the achievements of their peers as they progress through their own academic paths.

In the realm of sport, Newhaven College has witnessed remarkable success, with four SEISA teams rising to victory in their respective divisions. The senior boys’ football team, senior girls’ soccer team, and both the intermediate and senior girls’ basketball teams all brought home wins, displaying not only skill but also determination and teamwork. These achievements were extended to the SEISA spring carnival, an event that brought together students from across SEISA schools. The atmosphere was one of excitement and camaraderie; connections between schools were strengthened, and friendships flourished as students cheered one another on and celebrated each other's dedication. The SEISA Cross Country carnival was another highlight, with Beaconhills Pakenham securing first place. Newhaven College took an admirable third, and individual victories by Joey Thompson and Lara Smyth, each winning their respective senior divisions, underscored the talent and spirit of our athletes.

In summary, Term 3 at Newhaven College has embodied the spirit of achievement, challenge, and community, setting a high standard for the future, and inspiring all members of our school to pursue their goals with passion and perseverance.

The Music Department has also been a source of pride and inspiration in recent weeks. Audiences were treated to outstanding performances from our senior VCE Music and VCE VET Music students, each demonstrating remarkable skill and dedication developed over the past year. The future of music at Newhaven was also apparent during the Spring Concert, where younger musicians performed with enthusiasm and talent, signalling a bright horizon for our creative arts programs. The success of these events is due in large part to the dedication of our talented staff, whose efforts ensure that such occasions are memorable and meaningful for all.

Japan Study Tour Update

Minnsan Konnichiwa!

Our Japan Study Tour is off to a wonderful start! After a smooth journey yesterday, including the bus trip to Melbourne and flight to Tokyo on Saturday 13 September, our students were very glad to arrive at their accommodation—17 hours after leaving Newhaven.

The morning began with a buffet breakfast featuring a range of interesting Japanese foods to try, which proved to be a highlight. The hotel’s convenience store also gave students the chance to sample unique snacks and practise their Japanese with the shop assistants.

Following breakfast, the group travelled to Ibaraki Christian Junior High School where they met their host families for the first time. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and warmth as families arrived to welcome our students. We were incredibly impressed with the maturity and enthusiasm the students showed as they greeted their hosts. While there were some nerves on the bus that morning, every student left smiling and ready for their homestay experience.

We look forward to sharing more updates later this week.

Year 9 Term 3 Update

Year 9 will finish Term 3 on a real high! Our NAIDOC Community Games will highlight the end of the term, with students throwing themselves into Marngrook and Buroinjin to earn valuable Community Points.

Throughout NAIDOC week, students had the privilege of working with Uncle Steve Parker to begin a brand-new mural at the Year 9 Centre; a project that every future Year 9 student will add to for years to come. Aunty Sonya Hunt led a Women’s Yarning Circle and Jewellery Making Workshop, creating a space for deep listening and connection. Students also had the unique opportunity to learn from Uncle Ron Murray, a world-renowned Yidaki (Didgeridoo) player and maker, who shared his music, culture, and storytelling with the cohort. Fingers crossed, we get to see Ron on the big stage at the AFL Grand Final this year.

Recently, we saw the launch of the Horizons Project in Xplore, challenging students to think creatively and explore big ideas that will shape their final project of the year. In addition, students completed their final selections for Peak Pursuit camps. Excitement is definitely building for this major end-of-year experience.

More information about Peak Pursuit will be shared with families in Term 4. A reminder that students will need a -5 °C sleeping bag for both Peak Pursuit and the Year 10 Camp. Parents will soon receive a letter with details on connecting to Camplist by OnePlanet, who can assist with the purchase or hire of a suitable sleeping bag.

Congratulations to all Year 9 students on a fantastic Term 3. We are proud of the way you have embraced opportunities, worked together, and challenged yourselves. We wish everyone a safe and restful holiday break, and we look forward to an exciting Term 4 ahead.

Visual & Performing Arts

Celebrating Our Musicians

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been privileged to hear so many of our students perform to an exceptionally high standard. Whether at our Spring Concert in the Union Theatre or through our VCE and VET Music Performance evenings, it has been a joy to see all their hard work come to life.

Spring Concert

What an incredible evening of music-making at our Spring Concert on Monday 8 September at the Wonthaggi Union Theatre. Every student who took the stage should feel immensely proud of their hard work, commitment, and creativity.

The concert opened with a strong performance from our Senior Guitar Ensemble led by Sam Rainey. It was wonderful to hear the development of our string players in the Junior School Orchestra and Chamber Strings under the direction of Rebecca Scully. Special congratulations to our Year 4 Strings, who presented a heartfelt rendition of Lanterns by Birds of Tokyo.

Our Junior Taiko Ensemble brought energy with their performance of Dakokara by Yuta Kato. The Junior School Choir, led by Nina Prideaux, delivered their usual animated storytelling—this time with The Elves and the Shoemaker. The Middle School Choir impressed with Sara Bareilles’ Opening Up and Marvin Gaye’s 1960s classic Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.

The Senior Vocal Ensemble showcased their beautifully blended choral sound with Schubert’s An Die Musik and an exciting West Side Story medley (Something’s Coming and Tonight). The choirs combined to perform their award-winning pieces from the VSMF Competition (Follow My Own Dream and Running Up That Hill), closing the first half with a moving rendition of Lean On Me.

After interval, our young musicians gave a big finish. The Year 5 Band performed admirably with A Ceremonial March and Taio Cruz’s Dynamite—remarkable given they only began playing their instruments in February! The Year 6 Bands impressed with James Ryan’s arrangements of Tequila (6P)and When the Saints (6OD). Many of these students also contributed to the Intermediate Concert Band, which performed Ryan’s original compositions (Triumphal Entry and Mango Smoothie) before closing with Funky Town.

Jono Wright’s Percussion Ensemble captivated the audience with Frank Corniola’s City Lights, a vivid musical take on the movement and sounds of a bustling city.

The Senior Concert Band thrilled with a mix of classics and comedy, opening with Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody and following with Rollo Takes a Walk, featuring Michael in a debut kazoo solo. Sam Armer then led a superb performance of Ravel’s Bolero before closing with Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

To end the evening, our Big Band presented four dynamic tunes: Strollin’ (featuring solos by Gabe Di Falco on double bass and Hayden Hopkins on tenor saxophone), Soul Chicken (with Madi King on alto saxophone), The Nearness of You (with guest soloist Aoife O’Connell), and the lively Pink Panther Mambo (featuring Felix Fothergill on trumpet and Midi Klin on alto saxophone).

Congratulations to all students and staff on presenting such a diverse and high-quality program. It was truly inspirational.

We're thrilled to announce the winners of the fabulous Spring Concert Raffle were Felix Fothergill, Linda Hopkins and Peter Rhee.

Keep Making Music

We encourage all students to continue their musical journey by joining or continuing with our MusicPlus ensembles and choirs. Whether you are already part of the program or considering getting involved—we want you!

Year 6H Pizza Art

Year 6H has been consumed with making pizzas for the term in Art. Fantastic achievement in that every student finished one by the deadline. It was a lot of fun in the Art Room, first making bases from cardboard and adding crusts with materials soaked in PVA for stiffening. Once dried the bases were covered in gesso and then painted to make burnt crusts and add tomato paste with paints. The final stage was to add toping. The theme, MY FAVOURITE PIZZA, meant they could draw small images of anything they loved to add to the topic. Icons added included sporting items, aircraft, tractors, animals and food items.
Well done to all the students in 6P who took the task on with great enthusiasm.

SEISA Lawn Bowls

As part of the SEISA Spring Carnival, 12 students from Years 7-12 attended the Pakenham Bowls Club for the annuals Lawn Bowls competition. In the lead up to the competition, some of the students had been practising their technique at lunchtimes in The Collect and this was clear to see as both the Senior and Junior Teams qualified for the Grand Final. Both teams were victorious in their sections with a strong performance from the Intermediates, Newhaven College managed to come out overall winners on the day! There was a great atmosphere on the greens all day with students supporting each other and developing their technique and strategy with the support of some of the club members who had come along to help out. District 5/6 Basketball Tournament

Newhaven College had the honour of hosting the District 5/6 Basketball Tournament on Monday 15 September. It was an awesome day in the sunshine (and a bit of wind), but that didn’t stop anyone. Every team gave it a red-hot go.

We entered a strong line-up, an A Division Boys team and an A Division Girls team, plus two B Division Boys teams and two B Division Girls teams. Our players showed fantastic teamwork, effort and sportsmanship all day.

The competition was tight, with several results decided on percentage. Both our A Girls and A Boys finished 3rd overall on percentage, a great effort against quality opposition. Our B teams battled hard, learned heaps, and kept the energy high right to the final siren.

A huge thank you to our amazing parent coaches Anthony Clark, Steve Reginer, Nathan Hollings, Cassie Dunk, and Emily Yields, and to student Hayden Fenwick for their awesome coaching throughout the day. Your support made a massive difference, thank you.

Newhaven College takes out first place in the Auscycling MTB XC series two years running!

Newhaven College Mountain Bike Academy riders wrapped up the 2025 AusCycling Schools Mountain Bike Series with a double header in Castlemaine and Bendigo on the 6th/7th September weekend.

More than 16 students from Year 1 to Year 10 competed, facing hot, sunny conditions on Saturday followed by heavy rain and thick mud on Sunday.

Despite the challenges, Newhaven finished first overall in the Victorian series, an outstanding achievement for a regional seaside school. This result reflects the determination of students and the commitment of families who travel across Victoria to support the program.

A special mention goes to MTB Coach Tom Basterfield, who accompanied and supported our students throughout the entire series, providing encouragement, guidance, and expertise at every round

Standout overall series results included:

  • Lucy Thompson – 1st place (third year running)
  • Austin Mitchell – 3rd place
  • Evelyn McCabe – 3rd place
  • Sophia Hardy – 3rd place

Congratulations to all riders on their efforts across the season. With the cross-country series now complete, focus now turns to the downhill racing season ahead.

If your child is interested in mountain biking please reach out to Steven Scott via SEQTA to find out how to get involved.
