Xanadu – A Great Success

I would like to congratulate all those who were part of the successful production of Xanadu at the Wonthaggi Arts Centre. It was wonderful to see so many of our school community flock to this event with full houses at each of the four performances. Our annual College musical is always a cultural highlight of our school year and this year’s was no exception. All aspects of the production were first class from the lighting, sound, sets, costume and, of course, our remarkably talented students. My special thanks to Matt Goss as Musical Director and to Director Karen Milkins-Hendry. The school are very fortunate to have such talented and experienced staff to lead this production. Go to the Visual and Performing Arts section of this email for lots of photos.

Athletics

Last week was a busy week of athletics for our school. On Wednesday, Newhaven hosted the District Primary Athletics Carnival for students in Grades 3 to 6 with ten participating schools and over 350 participants – plus many more in the crowd! Well done to all our competitors and a special congratulations to our Primary Sport Co-ordinator, Jackie Clark, who did much of the organising of this major inter-school event.

Last Thursday, our Athletics team travelled to Casey Fields for the annual SEISA Athletics. After winning the carnival in 2023 and 2024 we were looking at a three-peat only to fall just short for a more than respectable runners up placing. Once again we had some outstanding achievements on the day. Congratulations to the following students who were Age Group Champions:

U13 Male:  Tijian Coldora

U 17 Female:  Savannah O’Keeffe

U17 Male:  Froley Anderson

U21 Female:  Lara Smyth

U21 Male:  Lucas Allen

Watching the athletes compete, the very high standard of competition was noticeable with many records being set. Congratulations to St Paul’s Grammar on being overall champions.

ANZAC Day

In addition to our own school ANZAC ceremony Newhaven College was once again honoured to participate prominently in our local community and RSL ANZAC Day services across Bass Coast. In addition to addresses given by our School Captains Grace Howlett, Abby Pappas, Isaac Savona and Gabe Di Falco, our Junior School Captains presented a wreath. In the days following, a number of members of the public contacted me to let me know how impressed they were by our students and the contribution they made to such an important occasion.

Mother’s Day

On behalf of the school I would like to wish all of our Newhaven mums a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday. I hope you have a chance to spend time with family and loved ones.

College News

Xanadu!

Last weekend, family, friends and community members were entertained by the singing and dancing (and roller skating!) spectacle of Newhaven College’s Senior School production of Xanadu.

The amazingly talented performers and professional production standards provided a dazzling show for musical enthusiasts. Director, Karen Milkins-Hendry and Musical Director, Matt Goss led and inspired a high-quality performance that was truly a celebration for the school community.

Full report and tons of photos can be found in the Visual & Performing Arts section of this newsletter.

ANZAC Day Commemorations

It is a proud tradition for Newhaven College students to speak at ANZAC Day ceremonies across Bass Coast on ANZAC Day. Newhaven College Captains Isaac Savona and Grace Howlett spoke at the Cowes RSL Dawn Service, with Isaac also speaking at the 11am service in Cowes. College Captain Gabriel Di Falco delivered his speech at the Inverloch RSL service and Abby Papas was the guest speaker at the San Remo Community Service. Our Junior School Captains, Venus Herath Mudiyanselage, Dallas Latham, Nate Kondarios and Peyton Rhee also took part in the ANZAC Day services, laying wreaths on behalf of the College at the 11am Cowes ceremony.

On the day before ANZAC Day, Newhaven College’s students and staff gathered to reflect and show appreciation to our armed forces past and present. The amphitheatre was soaked in the moving music of bagpipes played by Year 12 piper Mackenzie Cameron and the Celtic Drum played by his brother, Year 10 student James Cameron, as students and staff assembled.

Proceedings were run by School Captains Isaac Savona, Abby Papas, Gabriel Di Falco and Grace Howlett. In her speech at the College service, College Captain Grace Howlett reflected on how all the students assembled should reflect on how young the ANZAC veterans were when they went into battle. Her speech was poignant as the school community reflected on the ANZAC spirit and offered their thanks to those who have served and are serving now.

The Combined College Choir sang the poem 'In Flanders Fields' by Craig Tibbitts as well as the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems. Year 12 student Felix Fothergill and Brass Specialist James Ryan played the Last Post on trumpet. The Junior School Captains laid a wreath at the Lone Pine as Year 9 students raised the flags.

Join us - Reconciliation Walk

Tuesday 27 May at 9.10am

National Reconciliation Week (NRW), observed annually from 27 May to 3 June, is a period dedicated to celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of all Australians, particularly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is a time to reflect on the past, understand the present, and actively work towards a more just and equitable future for all.

The entire school community is invited to join our staff and students on a special Reconciliation Walk around our oval in recognition of National Reconciliation Week.

Fundraising Dress Up Day - Movie Characters

On Tuesday 6 March, we continued in our efforts to raise $15,000 for the Bali Children Foundation, the chosen 2025 College Charity. It was impressive to see how well all the students embraced the Movie Character theme, with lots of Harry Potters, Avengers and even Batman! The bake sale in Junior school was a massive hit, thanks to our newly opened Baking Club run by Ms Fagan. Thanks to all those who participated in the bake sale, we managed to raise a massive $1249.65, adding a huge contribution to our new total, which is now well over $6000.

We are excited to share that we have decided our next dress up themed day will be on the Friday 13 June. The theme for this day will be Pyjama day and will coincide with our inaugural College Movie Night, ensuring everyone is nice and cozy for this event. More information about this event will be sent out soon.

The money raised from these events goes towards helping thousands of children to complete school, find employment and improve the lives, of not only themselves but also those of their families and wider Balinese communities.

Welcome to Term 2

A very warm welcome back to all our students, families, and staff as we begin Term 2. This term promises to be filled with exciting learning opportunities, special events, and moments of community connection. I hope everyone enjoyed a restful break and is ready for the wonderful experiences ahead.

Mother’s Day Wishes

As Mother’s Day approaches, we take a moment to celebrate and honour the incredible mothers, grandmothers, aunties, and special women in our community. Your love, guidance, and unwavering support shape our children’s lives in countless meaningful ways every day.

At Wednesday’s Junior School Assembly, our Year 1 students spoke from the heart, sharing why they love their mums so much, accompanied by heartfelt pictures. Their presentations were filled with mentions of cuddles, hugs, delicious cooking, care, and endless love. One child described their mum as the “best living thing in the world,” while another had us all laughing with, “I love my mum because she makes lots of money!”

We wish all our mums and special carers a happy Mother’s Day, filled with love, gratitude, and plenty of well-deserved appreciation.

Class Representatives – Building Our Community

Our Class Representatives (Class Reps) play a vital role in bringing the Newhaven College family community together through a variety of planned social events outside of school hours. These gatherings are organised by our Class Reps and provide a fantastic opportunity for year level families to connect, share experiences, and build supportive relationships. This sense of community enriches not only our children’s school experience but also strengthens the network of support among parents.

Class Reps are currently organising one event per term, and we warmly encourage new families to get involved. Each year level has a dedicated WhatsApp group to facilitate communication. If you have not yet joined your year level’s WhatsApp group, please contact Dearne at JS reception and she will assist you.

A sincere thank you to our 2025 Class Reps for their dedication to fostering a welcoming and connected community.

Prep Information Morning

Last week, we welcomed a number of prospective families to our Prep Information Morning. After an introduction from our Admissions Officer, Bec Anderson, Principal Tony Corr welcomed the group. Head of Junior School Cath Huther spoke passionately about our Prep program, and how it flows through a student's entire school journey.

The highlight for all in attendance was when Mum of Year 2 student Arki and Prep student Benji, Kyoko Blondel spoke to the group. She spoke passionately about her road to discovering the wonders of Newhaven College and how being embraced by the College community cemented her decision to bring the family permanently to Phillip Island.

We sincerely thank Kyoko for her enthusiastic words!

Year 1 Then and Now Experience

On Wednesday, 30 April, our Year 1 students had the wonderful opportunity to step back in time during the Then and Now Experience. As part of their history unit, students welcomed grandparents, parents, and special friends into the classroom to share stories from their own childhoods. The room buzzed with curiosity as students listened to tales of favourite toys, family holidays, and games from the past, and explored fascinating artifacts like vintage cameras and old coins.

The Year 1 students asked questions and were amazed by stories about what it was like being a child last century. Especially when they were told children didn't have TVs and had to hand wash the dishes! Arabella's Nonna, Rosa shared stories of growing up in Italy, Winsley and Huntley's grandmother spoke about her Greek heritage and Eva's family friend John shared many interesting artifacts and stories about growing up in Fiji.

Thank you to all who shared their memories and made history come alive for our students.

Paper Planes for PICAL

On a sunny Friday 2 May, many of our Junior School students chose to participate in a paper plane competition, initiated by Year 4 student Jude Thompson. With help from Odin Jamieson in Year 2, Jude planned, advertised and judged the competition. We were thrilled to have so many children enter and thank their families for supporting Jude‘s leadership.

Our two winners for the longest throw were Joey Leary and Ari Loizou and, amongst some very strong entries, Maverick Steel took out the prize for most creative plane. Jude chose to donate the proceeds of the competition to the Phillip Island Community and Learning Centre, and we are proud to announce that $122 was raised!

We congratulate Jude for his initiative and for providing a fun lunchtime activity for our students.

Giving Young People a Voice Through the Election Campaign

As Australia completed another election campaign season, our nation once again engaged in important conversations about leadership, vision, fairness, and the future. While elections may seem like a topic reserved for adults, schools like Newhaven College have a powerful opportunity to harness this national moment and inspire students to find their voice and develop their capacity to care deeply about the world around them.

In Middle School, where identity, independence, and curiosity begin to sharpen, we believe that apathy has no place. We want our students to care - about fairness, leadership, justice, integrity, and each other. The election campaign provides a real-world context where these values come alive. Through discussion, debate, inquiry, and action, students can explore current issues, understand how democracy works, and recognise that their voices, even at a young age, matter. The Student Representative Council (SRC) plays an active role in the school.

At Newhaven College, every Middle School student is invited to see themselves not just as a learner, but as someone who contributes meaningfully to our community through their unique role as a Guardian, Storyteller, Investigator, and Creator.

  • As Guardians, students are encouraged to speak up when they see injustice, to be kind in their interactions, and to stand for what is right, values that lie at the heart of democratic participation.
  • As Storytellers, they listen deeply and share their views respectfully, building empathy and understanding, essential tools for bridging political divides.
  • As Investigators, students ask questions, challenge ideas, stay informed, and work through complex issues just as engaged citizens must do in an election campaign.
  • As Creators, they think innovatively about the kind of society they want to shape, bringing a positive mindset and fresh ideas to improving their school, and ultimately, their world.

By encouraging students to explore election issues and ask, “What do I care about?”, we empower them to become informed, passionate, and thoughtful participants in society, not just in the future, but right now. Whether it’s through student leadership initiatives, classroom discussions, or civic engagement projects, we want our Middle School students to realise that their voice is not only welcomed but also needed.

I hope that the election season was a chance to fuel their passion, spark curiosity, and nurture a generation that won’t settle for apathy but instead steps forward with courage, purpose, and care.

Celebrating Our Talented Students

A huge congratulations to the cast and crew of Xanadu! What a spectacular celebration of colour, roller skates, glitter, and music. The show reminded us of the power of imagination and the courage to "dream the dream and go where no one else dared to go." Thank you to the dedicated staff and supportive parents who helped our students believe in themselves and shine so brightly on stage.

We applaud the marvellous performances of Matilda Cotton, Sophia Hardy, Evie Hollings, Madison King, Charlee Pedersen, Ruby Pedersen, Ned Scott, Ella Sibson, Juliette Stephens, Soul Van Stokrom, Aurelia Wallis, and Ariana Ward. A special thank you also to our ushers for their help across the performances -your contribution did not go unnoticed.

Congratulations and thank you also to the students who represented Newhaven at the 3-6 District Athletics on 30 April, SEISA Athletics, and the State Swimming Championships on 1 May. It is wonderful to see our students embracing opportunities and showcasing their talents and passions across a variety of pursuits.

Celebrating Our School's Birthday – Foundation Assembly Invitation

We warmly invite all parents and caregivers to join us for our Foundation Assembly on Tuesday, 13 May, beginning at 9.10am in the Gymnasium.

This special event marks the anniversary of our school’s founding—a time to come together as a community to reflect on our journey, honour our traditions, and celebrate all that makes our school unique and vibrant. The Foundation Assembly is always filled with pride, spirit, and student involvement.

A reminder to all students to wear their full winter uniform, including their blazer, as we come together to mark this meaningful occasion with respect and unity.

Happy Mother’s Day

Wishing all the wonderful mums and mother figures a joyful Mother’s Day on Sunday.

Penpal Project-Bali Children Foundation

Ten Year 6 students from Newhaven College have begun writing letters to students in Bali. Facilitated by the Bali Children Foundation, the Indonesian students attend a public primary school in Buleleng, Bali named SDN Tigawasa. The penpal project aims to enhance student connections across countries and for students to exchange information about their school lives and experiences. So far, students have received 1 letter each and Newhaven students are excitedly awaiting a reply from their second letters sent this week. Gathering and sharing thoughts, stories and feelings as well as how to construct a letter and appropriate topics, are some of the skills that the project develops. It is also an opportunity for Balinese students to practise their English.

Year 6 students participating are: Amelia Ritterman, Dae Anderson, Mia Bowring, Liliana Fenwick, Sierra Phillips, Alfie Russo, Flynn Wright, Sophie Morse, Harper Perry and Amelia Russo.

The Manifestation of Joy in the Senior School

A Journey Through the Everyday Moments

Senior School is often depicted as a challenging period replete with academic pressures, social challenges, and the quest for self-discovery. However, amidst these trials, joy manifests in myriad ways, illuminating the corridors of learning and growth with a radiant glow. In this passage, I would like to explore the multifaceted ways in which joy finds its place in secondary schools, transforming the educational experience into a vibrant tapestry of memorable moments.

Academic Achievement and Intellectual Curiosity

One of the most profound sources of joy in Senior School for many students (but sadly, not all) is the sense of accomplishment that accompanies academic achievement. Whether it's the elation of receiving a 90+ ATAR at the end of Year 12, or simply a stellar mark on a challenging examination, the satisfaction of mastering a difficult concept, or the pride in presenting a well-researched project, these intellectual victories instil a deep-seated sense of fulfillment. Additionally, as an educator, I would like to think that the pursuit of knowledge itself can be a joyful endeavour. The curiosity sparked by an engaging lesson, the excitement of delving into a new subject, and the thrill of intellectual discovery contribute to a joyful academic journey. One of the moments in my experience as a biology teacher that brings me immense joy is seeing the face of a student change when battling through tough content, when suddenly the bells of enlightenment toll and said student simply “gets it”. As a teacher, there are few moments more fulfilling than that exact point when “the light goes on”.

Co-curricular Involvement

Co-curricular activities play a pivotal role in manifesting joy in Senior School. Participation in sport, music, musical theatre or Art Club, and other co-curricular pursuits provides students with opportunities to explore their passions, develop new skills, and forge meaningful connections with peers. The camaraderie and sense of belonging that arise from being part of a team or group are invaluable sources of joy. The exhilaration of a victorious game or the applause following a stellar performance contribute to a joyful school experience. I have no doubt that the performance of the Xanadu cast, so wonderfully well led by Cecily de Gooyer and Archie Robson, brought immense joy to the packed-out crowds that attended across three days, baying for one more song. More significantly, the joy of participating in such a visual and auditory feast for so many Newhaven College students is no doubt still palpable.

Social Connections and Friendships

The friendships formed during a young person’s schooling are often some of the most significant and enduring relationships in one's life. The bonds forged through shared experiences, mutual support, and genuine companionship are powerful sources of joy. Whether it's the daily interactions with friends, the inside jokes, the collaborative study sessions, or the heartfelt moments of mutual challenge and support, these social connections create a sense of community and belonging. I see these connections forged every day in the Senior School between young men and women who care for each other and will be there for their friends when support is needed, and when the joy of celebrating successes inevitably comes. The joy derived from these relationships enriches the school experience, providing a source of comfort and happiness amidst what can seem like insurmountable challenges.

Personal Growth and Self-Discovery

The latter years of school are a transformative period of personal growth and self-discovery. The journey of understanding oneself, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and developing a sense of identity brings immense joy not only to a young person but also to their parents. The milestones achieved along this journey, such as overcoming personal obstacles, achieving personal goals, and gaining confidence in one's abilities, are sources of profound happiness. The joy of self-discovery and personal growth is a testament to the resilience and potential of all young people, something that can sadly be lost as we age.

Acts of Kindness and Compassion

Acts of kindness and compassion contribute significantly to the manifestation of joy in high school. Whether it's a simple gesture of helping a classmate, participating in community service, or supporting a friend in need, these acts create a ripple effect of positivity and joy. The sense of fulfillment and happiness derived from making a positive impact on others is a powerful source of joy. The contribution of our four College Captains in recent ANZAC Day celebrations both at Newhaven College and in the communities of Inverloch, San Remo and Cowes was outstanding. All four captains spoke so beautifully to thousands of locals, charming crowds with their anecdotes and determination to acknowledge the efforts and the loss of those who fought and died at Gallipoli during The Great War. Personally, I am immensely proud to say that we have created a sense of joy within the Senior School. Our senior students and teachers, without a doubt, foster a culture of kindness and empathy and create an environment where joy can flourish.

Year 9 Update

Term 2 has launched at full speed for our Year 9 students, and they’ve risen to the challenge with energy, enthusiasm, and impressive maturity.

We kicked off the term with the much-loved Gaelic Community Games. This was followed by an immersive study of World War I in Xplore, featuring a powerful and moving monologue presentation by Glenn from Troubie Theatre. His performance brought history to life and left a lasting impression on our students.

Earlier this week, we returned from our Melbourne excursions, where students visited the Shrine of Remembrance and explored the Southbank and Yarra precincts. The trip was not only an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Australia’s wartime history but also a valuable first step in preparing for their upcoming City Cite experience. Our students were fantastic representatives of the College being engaged, respectful, and confident, navigating the city environment.

Amid this packed schedule, the students have continued to excel in all areas. Their achievements in SEISA Athletics and their contributions to the College Production deserve special recognition. I am incredibly proud of the way the Year 9 cohort has handled the pace and pressure of this term so far.

Looking ahead, students will soon be submitting their preferences for Peak Pursuit, our end-of-year outdoor adventure programme. Excitement is already building, and we’re thrilled to see so many students asking questions and showing such strong interest. More information will be supplied to students in our Year 9 assembly.

Our Year 9 students will soon begin their mid-year exams, with assessments in English, Science, and Maths scheduled across Week 6 and 7. This is an important opportunity for students to consolidate their learning and demonstrate their progress. We encourage all students to approach this period with focus and commitment, making use of the study support available through their classes and teachers. An alternative program will run alongside exams to provide time for revision, City Cite preparation, and continued engagement with Community Studies.

Well done to all Year 9s for their ongoing effort.

Head of Year 9

Environmental Science Excursion: River to Rock

On Tuesday 6 May, VCE Environmental Science students enjoyed a field excursion under blue skies and a balmy 26 degrees—although the gusty wind added an extra challenge to their data collection efforts.

They began at Bass River Landing, where students conducted water quality testing. Working in groups, they measured pH, salinity, turbidity and dissolved oxygen levels to assess the site’s potential for supporting biodiversity. Students worked efficiently to gather accurate, primary data and consider the impact of each water quality factor on aquatic life.

The excursion continued at San Remo, where students explored local fossil sites and examined rock formations as part of their study of the rock cycle and mass extinction events. This hands-on learning opportunity deepened their understanding of geological time and environmental change.

Back at the lab, students compared their Bass River findings with test results from local tap and pond water. By analysing the data, they determined which site was most likely to support high biodiversity and explored the reasons behind these ecological differences.

It was a productive and engaging day that gave classroom learning links to real life.

Xanadu- School Musical

Thank you to our school community for supporting our school production Xanadu in large numbers. It was wonderful to see our Junior School students dressing up and really getting into the joy and fun of this glittery Musical. Your applause is still ringing in all cast, crew and musician’s ears as we sit back and feel both satisfied and relieved that the show has continued the strong tradition of providing entertaining performances for our appreciative audience.

We were blessed with strong leadership from our Year 12 students Cecily de Gooyer (Kira/Clio), Archie Robson (Sonny), Nissa Campbell Walker (Melpomene), Indigo Aurora (Calliope), Matilda Russell (Erato), Olivia Helps (Dance ensemble) and Angelina Mumby (Rock Star) who role-modelled to our cast of 47 students how to approach rehearsals and performance with dedication, commitment and empathy for others.

A team of over 80 staff, students and parents all contributed to realising this vibrant and comedic musical in fine style in collaboration with professional partners. Entering our dazzling foyer (thanks Mel Flower and Sonya Neal!), seeing the photos showcasing the students and the incredible work in costuming of Steph Thornborrow and Robyn Rumbelow we aimed to transport people away from their daily routines for a couple of hours into a light-hearted story with great music played by our talented band. Musical Director Matt Goss, Choreographer Leasal Liddle-Pirouet, Vocal Coach Elly Poletti and myself continually spoke about how impressed we were with the approach of our whole cast during Production week as they patiently worked on cues and honed their dance and scene work.

Thank you to all who supported these students to have a positive and enjoyable experience.

Well done to all students who competed. It’s always an enjoyable day for both students and staff, and we look forward to another great event next year.

District Athletics Carnival

On Wednesday, 30 April, our Year 3-6 athletics team took part in the District Athletics Carnival right here at Newhaven College, and what an amazing day it was. Our athletes gave it their all across a variety of track and field events, and the results were incredible.

The competition was tough, but our students rose to the occasion, showing off some fantastic skills. Whether it was sprinting, jumping, throwing, or relaying, everyone gave their best effort. It definitely paid off, with many students progressing to the Division championships, which will be held in September. All students in Years 4-6 who placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd will progress to Division level. For our Year 3 students, it was an awesome opportunity to showcase their skills.

Thank you to the staff and students for their assistance on the day.

SEISA Swimming Term 1 at MSAC

On the final day of Term 1, a team of enthusiastic Newhaven College swimmers competed at the SEISA Swimming Carnival held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). It was fantastic to see the positive attitude and determination of all our swimmers, many of whom stepped up to swim in events outside their age group to support the team.

It was a successful and exciting day in the pool, with Newhaven College placing second overall behind the combined team from Warragul and Traralgon St Paul’s schools. A special congratulations goes to our four Age Group Champions:

  • Male U12 – Ethan Lynch
  • Male U13 – Archie Smyth
  • Male U15 – Aidan Smyth
  • Female U21 – Lara Smyth

We also celebrated some outstanding individual achievements with four new SEISA records set by Archie Smyth and Isabella Lynch:

  • M U13 50m Freestyle – Archie Smyth (NC) 26.51
    Previous Record: 27.63 – Alex A Tsebelis (STP, 2013)
  • M U13 50m Backstroke – Archie Smyth (NC) 29.34
    Previous Record: 32.81 – Alex A Tsebelis (STP, 2013)
  • F U14 50m Breaststroke – Isabella Lynch (NC) 37.02
    Previous Record: 37.44 – Sofia S Hogg (BCB, 2020)
  • M U13 100m Freestyle – Archie Smyth (NC) 59.96
    Previous Record: 1:05.48 – Corbin C Blake (STP, 2021)

Beyond the impressive results, the spirit of the team stood out. The students cheered each other on with enthusiasm, demonstrated great sportsmanship, and supported one another throughout the day making the event a memorable one.

Congratulations to all of the swimmers who represented Newhaven College.

Edie's Soccer Win

Congratulations Edie Rowbottom on her team's incredible win in the U13s Junior Girls event at the Macca’s City Cup 2025.

Edie is a talented and versatile player, able to slot into multiple positions on the field, making her a highly valued member of her team.

This year’s Macca’s City Cup was the largest junior tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, featuring over 370 teams, 4,000 participants, and 900 games played across age groups from U7s to U16s.

The competition was intense, with many close matches decided by penalty shootouts, including the semi-finals and finals, where Edie’s team, representing Melbourne City, claimed victory over Keilor Park in a thrilling finish.

With the season now underway, Edie is showing her dedication by training four nights a week. The team often hosts special training sessions and events featuring guests from the Matildas, further inspiring players like Edie.

Well done, Edie – what a fantastic achievement.

Overcoming Adversity: Lessons from the Year 10 camp

Last term, I had the pleasure of witnessing many remarkable (and not so remarkable) moments during our Year 10 camp, which I was fortunate enough to be a part of. Bushwalking and grinding my way up steep mountain paths and through the bush has been a passion of mine for the best part of 30 years. So, well before we embarked on this epic journey, I knew what lay ahead. Awaiting us amidst the stunning landscapes, the chirping birds, and the occasional squeak of a well-worn hiking boot, was a true test of endurance: a four-day trek, each of us laden with heavy packs, trudging up steep inclines and down rocky paths. Sound like a scene from a survival reality show? You’re not far off!

Adversity is often like that heavy pack we all carried - unwanted, cumbersome, and seemingly insurmountable. But as we navigated the rugged terrain, I believe we learned a few valuable lessons about overcoming life’s challenges. It’s worth noting that the things which make the pack heavy are also the things we need for survival. The food, cooking equipment and tents had to be equally distributed, every member of the team carrying a share of the burden. What a great metaphor!

The first lesson hit home during our very first uphill climb. As we huffed and puffed our way up, I think I heard a collective sigh of despair. Who knew that the term “mountain of homework” could be so literal? There were a number of students at that point expressing a desire to throw in the towel (or should I say, the tent?). But instead of succumbing to fatigue, these brave souls found strength in one another. With every “You’ve got this!” and “Just a little further!” each one was encouraged to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

I was particularly impressed by the camaraderie that blossomed during those tough moments. Students who may not have known each other so well became fast friends, united by the shared struggle of not just the hike, but also the inevitable blisters and questionable campfire cooking. It was heartwarming to see a group of teens who, just weeks ago, might have been competing for the last slice of pizza, now working together to lift each other’s spirits. As we read in Proverbs, "A brother is born for adversity" implies that people are particularly supportive and reliable during difficult times. It suggests that the bond between them strengthens and becomes more valuable when facing challenges. The saying emphasizes the unique strength and comfort found in relationships during times of hardship.

Listening to the more experienced campers and leaders was another golden nugget of wisdom. Their advice was like the trail markers that guided us through the toughest sections. I was busy wondering how many calories I could burn by simply standing still. “Take it one step at a time,” they advised, which turned out to be invaluable not just for the hike, but for life itself.

As we reached our destination each day, there was a sense of joy mixed with relief and elation, and a sense of accomplishment, of course. Around the campsite we shared tales from the day’s adventure, laughed at the funny things people did and said, and shared our sense of accomplishment.

Overcoming adversity isn’t just about pushing through; it’s about supporting one another, sharing wisdom, and finding joy in the journey. So, next time you face a challenge, remember to embrace the struggle, lean on your friends, and celebrate your victories, no matter how small.

Grace & Peace
