One of the great privileges of working in education is the reminder that learning never stops — not for our students, and certainly not for those of us entrusted with guiding them. As I communicated recently to families, next week I will be taking leave to travel to Scotland and England, where I will be visiting a number of schools and undertaking professional study with the purpose of bringing fresh thinking back to Newhaven.
Experiences like these are very valuable. Stepping into a different educational context — observing how other schools approach teaching, wellbeing, curriculum design, and community — offers a new perspective. Speaking with educators who are tackling the same challenges we face but from an entirely different vantage point is of great value.
It strikes me that this is precisely the same principle that underpins some of our most valued student programs. Our annual Ibaraki Exchange to Japan continues to be a highlight of the Newhaven calendar, offering students the chance to immerse themselves in a culture vastly different from their own, to build resilience and independence, and to return home with a broader understanding of the world. This year, we are also excited to be sending students on a cultural immersion to Sri Lanka — a wonderful new opportunity that will challenge and inspire them in equal measure. These are not simply trips. They are formative experiences that shape the way our young people see themselves and their place in the world. Whether it is a student stepping off a plane in Colombo or a Principal walking into a school in Edinburgh, the underlying truth is the same: we grow most when we move beyond the familiar.
Our Foundation Day on Wednesday, 13 May, was a truly wonderful celebration. It was a day that brought together so many different aspects of school life and reminded us all of the depth and richness of the Newhaven community. We were fortunate to welcome Catherine Basterfield, CEO of Phillip Island Nature Parks, as our guest speaker. As a Newhaven alumnus, Catherine spoke with warmth and authenticity about her journey from our school to her current role, and her story was a powerful testament to where a Newhaven education can lead. See more about Foundation Day in the College News section of this newsletter.
Foundation Day also saw the launch of our new school film, which many of you have now had the chance to view. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and it is easy to see why. The film captures so much of what makes this school special — most importantly, happy young people with abundant opportunities, thriving in a safe and supportive environment.
I look forward to sharing what I learn abroad when I return, and I thank you for your continued support of our wonderful school.
